I purchased a Compaq Presario 730 US Notebook PC (second hand), running XP. I asked if I could use it with my Netgear router on my home computer to access the internet and was told yes to just buy a wireless pc card.

I purchased the Netgear 54 mbps Wireless PC Card WG511 v2. As I was following the installation CD instructions, when it came time to insert the pc card there was a yellow exclamation mark triangle pop up on my notebook stating: “System Info. Device Texas Instruments PCI-1410 Cardbus Controller has detected a cardbus card in slot but the firmware on this system is not configured to allow”. Installation stops at this point.

I called the Netgear help desk and was told that I needed to go to the Compaq website and download a driver update for the PC Card.

I have had three live chats with HP.Com and was given sites to install Chipsets. First Chipset was VIA 4in1_443v, second was AMD-751-AMD761-AMD762. With each download I have tried to install the PC card and I still get the same System info message.

I was also told that if this did not correct the problem to try the pc card on another laptop. I do not have another laptop at this time, so I am not sure how I would do this. I do know that the Netgear router on my main computer works because it worked on my son’s laptop and on my husband’s laptop. I can not try this new card on theirs however because my son has moved 2000 miles away :cry and my husband has been mobilized for deployment overseas:major:cry , both have their laptops with them. Plus, with the windows error message that I am getting, why wouldn’t I think it was an issue with the notebook that I am using before thinking it is the new pc card?

Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Anyone have a direction to point me in? Does it sound like I need to contact HP again or am I just SOL?

    Hellooo,

Have you tried not installing the Netgear software but installing just the device drivers? If you can do that then you can just use Windows wireless network connection to detect your home network for you (in a lot of cases the windows wireless network connection is better than the stuff router companys send out anyway!).

I didn't think to try that before. I have tried it since reading your post and I still get the same error message. Thanks for your help anyway.

I tried googling and found this:

    Symptom(s):
Inserting card into computer causes error message - Error: "The device 'Texas Instruments PCI-1130 CardBus Controller' has detected a CardBus card in its slot, but the firmware on this system is not configured to allow the CardBus controller to be run in CardBus mode".
    Cause:
Microsoft Windows* 2000 Professional supports only 16-bit (R2) network adapters with this CardBus controller
    Solution:
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows* 2000 Professional. There is no resolution for this issue. Please use a 16-bit network card instead of a CardBus (32-bit) network card.

Applies to other computers using Texas Instruments PCI-1130 CardBus Controllers.

    Relevant Information:
Microsoft Windows* 2000 Professional, IBM ThinkPad* 760XD

I'm not using Windows 2000, a ThinkPad or the PCI-1130, but it still sounds close enough to my issues to lead me to beleive that I am not going to be able to use the pc card that I purchased.

Anyone have updated info of the above for XP?
