Case Fan Question

Hi, I purchased a new 120mm Antec, tri color, led case fan. My only reason for replacing the old one was because I wanted the led lights. My problem is the new fan came with two connectors, a 3 pin connector and a molex connector. I connected the 3 pin connector to my motherboard and nothing happened so I connected the molex connector instead and the fan works fine. I was just curious if anyone had any idea why this new fan doesn't work on my motherboard when the one I just replaced worked fine in the exact same spot on my board. :confused

 

Anyone have any ideas?

 

Some motherboards have different connections for fans (positive, negative and sensor).
You may need to look up info on the fan and motherboard to see if they are compatable wiring. If you have a Dell you can bet that is the problem.

 

Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned that I recently built the computer. Thanks so much for your reply though Stevestrib. I will definitely get out my motherboard manual and see if I can find anything.

 

Are there other locations on the mobo for system fans that you can test? Possibly the 3 pin connection is faulty or the mobo doesn't like the LED "signal" (unlikely).

 

It could be that the fan is draining to much power for the motherboard to supply the fan.

 

Thanks guys. I tried another connector on the mobo and it worked. I'm still not sure why the other connector didn't work. But it's all good as long as I'm connected. I didn't really want to just hook it up to the power supply and not be able to monitor fan speeds. Thanks again guys for your help.
