I'm looking for software that will let me copy cassette tapes and vinyl records to CDs. I think I have to get the music to my hard drive and then burn onto a CD. Someone told me I should convert the music to MP3 for space reasons. Can someone please tell me all I need to know about all this? Thanks!

Just google "rip vinyl records"and there's tons of progs. I recently d/l'ed a free one but can't find it now:eek:

These programs all work thru your sound card's input jack and will also work for cassettes. I got the idea from Langalist or Techtv on what and how to use. Search their databases.

BTW I'll keep looking in my disorganized drive.:D

Here it is. It's not free as I thought, but as I have over 500 jazz albums, I think that for me it would be worth it.

This was recommended by the peeps in previous post. Haven't had the time to try it. Will post back when I do.

There are also sound modifying progs out there, such as to get rid of hiss or skips. Haven't gotten there yet either and am not playing them till I record to CD.:)

I use both WaveWorks and WaveRepair...

I think Waverepair is the best for me...

Record the music into a wav file.
(I have my turntables go through a mixer and then in the Line In of the sound card, you cannot plug your turntable directly in to the card, a pre-amp will do as well)

I then de-click it with WaveRepair (shareware, but worth the money)
and then convert it to MP3 with DBPowerAmp...

1 song in Wav format can be 50 to 100Mb while in MP3 format it is only 3 to 10Mb

    Have fun

I use MusicMatch Jukebox. Seems to work fine for me. Record off my home amp. to CD.Besides it's free!

For copying I use Audiograbber (and Goldwave for eliminating noise and pops).

To run a turntable into the line-in of your computer, you need a phono pre-amp. This will do 2 things:

1 amplify the signal to the correct level
2 provide RIAA equalization to boost the low frequencies to the correct equalization.

I wouldn't convert to MP3 format if you want to retain the overall sound of vinyl.

Well, I am flummuxed. I started this thread on April 7, 2003, got some answers the same day, and found that augiedoggie had what I wanted. The link was to ripvinyl, which will do both vinyl and cassette tapes. I was quite remiss in not posting a thank-you...maybe that's why today's replies showed up all of a sudden. I've been using ripvinyl for my cassettes for over a year and like it a lot. Haven't tried my record collection yet, but I know that I will have to run a line from my stereo set (to which my turntable is connected) to my computer to do it. Thanks to everybody.

Lugztaz, FWIW, I keep a simple Excel spreadsheet record of any post I think may come on handy for me, or MG 'ers, at a later stage. It has just date I discovered the thread, thfread number, Description of thread, Subject, Operating system applicable and Links (Y/N) if links mentioned. Works for me, mainly W98SE and Xp stuff. Over 1300 entries so far. Uodate it nearly every day with the threads I write down in a Spirax notebook. Bazza
Tried to cut and paste example below, but it didn't work properly (## equals record number).
