I have a Sony Vaio laptop and the cat walked across it. Now the keyboard will not work. It will not type any letters and the mouse scroll wheel has changed into making the type larger or smaller
    Anyone please help

A quick google search doesn't come up with any obvious VAIO specific keyboard locking procedures, so it sounds to me like one of the keys is stuck down. Check them over carefully. If possible, boot the computer with a Win98SE boot disk & see if the keys work in DOS mode...that'll confirm or eliminate any Windows settings as the cuplrit.

For Temporary use, diagnostics, Ya might try an external Keyboard/Mouse

    Thanks for replies.
    Some more info...
I accessed the on-screen keyboard and pressed keys seemingly at randon. To my astonishment the fault disappeared...only to reappear when I re-started.
It seems as though the keyboard/mouse on startup reconfigures itself to an alien setting, but the language etc. is still set to english u.k.
Ive also tried updating the driver with no effect.

I don't know if this will work but you might try to uninstall keyboard from device manager and reboot windows and see if it redecting the keyboard helps.

Well, when you hold the CTRL key down, it makes your mouse scroll wheel increase/decrease the size of text. Maybe your CTRL key is stuck down. That would also explain none of the keys being able to type because CTRL+(any key) is a function. Try highlighting text, pressing C (Cut), and open up word or notepad and press V (Paste). If it cuts and pastes, you may want to see if you can unstick your CTRL key. Or just get a new keyboard.

Cool, you're right! I didn't know that so I tried it. It does sound like a stuck CTRL button.

wow, thanks for that, it is the ctrl button but it is the software that is sticking it at every startup.
Any ideas on the cure, it is just out of the 12 month warrenty

I don't know of any way that the software can be 'sticking' the key down at startup. Do you have another keyboard to try? If so, it will tell you if it is the keyboard or not.

    Thanks again guys,
I didn't realise there were 2 ctrl keys, it was the other one that was stuck, it popped back up after I pressed it.
