My wife is about three to four weeks from her due date now...which the doctor said is the point of where, if things start to happen then we just let nature take it's course.

My question is...We have noticed that her cat, who is very loyal and reacts to her as if a dog would to it's favorite master...and there went a week that the cat wouldn't have a thing to do with her, and then all the sudden within the last couple three days, she has been so far up her a$$ it's not even funny!! I've heard of animals having unheard of intuitions to sense things like labor etc.!! So I decided to do some googling, but came up with nothing cause I can't really think of a generic way to phrase such a thing that would be appropriate for googling. So I guess what I'm saying...has anyone else heard of such, or know where I could find some interesting facts/stories out in cyberspace, related to cats sensing labor coming on!?!? I know it is not a science but it is very interesting how animals react to things and I just thought it would be some interesting reading!!

That's just got to be incomfortable when you are about to go into labor...... :p

All I could find is this, but relates more to pregnancy than imminent birth.

This might be way off the wall, but Iam going to suggest it anyways.
It might be possible your wife has a different "smell" now that her body may be changing at the end of her pregnancy?
I know our dog can always tell when it's that time of the month around here. But with 3 girls still here, that is almost all month long.....lol

Maybe since dogs and cats have better hearing that we do, maybe just maybe they can hear the fetus moving around? Thats my opinion ;)

They say cats have a sixth sense - but in this case, it is probably another of your cat's senses that is responsible for this almost magical behavior. A cat's sense of hearing is absolutely incredible. They can hear high frequency sounds we cannot. They can also distinguish the tone or pitch of sounds better than we can. In addition, a cat's ability to locate the source of a sound is highly advanced. From a yard away, a cat can distinguish between sounds from sources only 3 inches apart. All of these attributes makes it quite easy for a cat to distinguish the sound of you opening the door to the cat food cupboard from the sound of you opening the cupboard door next to it.

almost everybody i've spoke to said their cats were 'gone' when the earthquake hit. even one person who said one of her cats is blind and never leaves the house was out. mine didnt come back for a full day, which is rare. my dogs were as surprised and scared as we were, so they didnt 'see' it coming. nobody knoiws where all the cats went. i wonder if they had some sort of gathering. like a fire drill. "in case of emergancy, all cats will immediately report to the nearest whatever....." lol

Cats can sense disease and death and often leave the household if someone is dying,it goes back to the days of the plague ect,the only cats who survived in those times were the ones who stayed away from the deseased areas,I think maybe the cat is sensing something like that:confused:

Another interesting fact is that dogs can smell cancer :)

I know what you mean Rikky. When my mother was in a rest home they told me the in house cats would lay under the bed of who ever was dying within the next couple of days. Animals have sense we are either lacking or unable to pay attention to.

When i was pregnant my cat did the same but then in my last Two weeks (when i become ingaged)of being pregnant it was on me, like for eg: i would just sit down from a hard days work and the cat would jump on my belly and start purring and proding and even trying to lick my belly, i was so interested in finding out why i asked my doc and he said its a smell women get and that attracts the male cats, but my cat was female so that didnt make sence to me so i asked the local vet and he told me that female cats get a mother instinct and get ready for the birth themselves as if they were going to give birth, although we can not hear the babys heartbeat just by ear, cats can and it also can depend on the season the closer to the breading season for cats the more likely they will act like this.....strange hey?

hope this helps........and congrats on the new arrival to be:)

Someone related to me (too hard to explain), got cancer, or something, and needed an oxygen thingy (incubator), and before that they had 2 dogs, both were really yappy and everything, a bit annoying. Then when he got it, they shut up, and sat with him all day....

Dogs are amazing, who said they weren't as smart as monkeys...

    Monkeys suck.
