Please help. I am new to all of this. I was told I could come to this website, go to hijackthis and download something that would help remove unwanted/unneeded programs/malware from my computer so it would run faster. I went to CCCleaner, but I could not figure it out - somehting simple, I am sure. I need step by step instructions because I have not been able to figure it out. Saw a lot of ads, but I don't need more stuff that the basics. Thanks.

    Hi and welcome to MGs

Your post really belongs in software. When you have a question, in order to get more people viewing it, you need to post in the correct forum. :)

As far as your question, you brought up two totally different types of software.

If you do not have a good working knowledge of your computer, I would highly recommend that you do Not use hijack this. Furthermore, it is just one tool in getting rid of malware on your system. It isn't even close to being the only tool.

Ccleaner is a different type of software. It removes unused files on your computer. It is an easy tool to use. You download it from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html After you have installed it, you click on the Run Ccleaner button.

Now...back to Malware. If you think you have malware and would like to get help here at MGs, please read http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=147935

CCleaner works well in the default mode it installs in. To download it just click one of the links with a flag by it. (In the center near the top of the page)
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html
Just install it, run it, push the Cleaner button, and push "Run cleaner". That's that. Then push the Registry button, push "Scan for issues", push "Fix selected issues", push "Fix all selected Issues", choose OK, close. (Somewhere in this part it asks if you want to back-up, choose what you want to do)
In the tools section is an un-installer to get rid of your unused or un-needed programs.just click on one and then click un-install.
In the Start-up part, you can prune down your programs that start when you boot-up. You can remove any that are not necessary. (the fewer running when you start, the better.) (Delete entry only removes them from your start-up not your PC)
