Anyone trying this as of yet? Thx.

I have been using winapp2.ini for many years, without any problems.

However, I do not need a .NET application to install the winapp2.ini file in the CCleaner folder; I always downloaded it directly from the CCleaner forum.

This software is also discussed in the Piriform forums, where MrG - the founder of Piriform - called it "illegal repackaging".

Oh this has taken a turn for the wonky.

Since I was the one who brought this program to the attention of MA in his software recommendation thread, I guess I should follow-up on the twists-and-turns of the past couple days of CCleaner Enhancer.

I would think people are now learning this program no longer works as intended since it updates from a website that is no longer active. Depending on what you choose to believe, the site of the person who wrote CCleaner Enhancer is down either to a "huge spike" in traffic (his words) or "illegal repackaging" (Piriform's words) so the program is pointless if you are looking for it to autoupdate. However, sites like Lifehacker(where I first learned of the program) have the .ini file available to download that is the core of the updating of the program. I've got it installed on both my laptop and desktop and it works fine.

Not sure why some folks are getting in a twist over the black helicopter aspect of the code; it's posted right on the Piriform forum and you can take the code and add any program you like. And the people that wrote CCleaner Enhancer apparently are all members of the Piriform Forum.

That's exactly what has been discussed and written on that forum.

Googling CCleaner Enhancer brings you tons of websites and quite a few of them with a solid reputation. I wouldn't be surprised that there was a run to get that app as it was also #9 here.

As I wrote in the Piriform forum, I think this application is a stupid idea!

People who have installed winapp2.ini manually, they know that they must also manually check for updates (in the Piriform forum).

People who have installed winapp2.ini through "CCleaner Enhancer" will never know when there is a new version of that definitions file available, unless they run that app every day. Otherwise they will just sit on an old winapp2.ini forever...

So when it comes to updates, the choices are run an app every day or visit a forum every day? :-D

Several programs are like that; SpywareBlaster comes to mind. I don't think Enhancer is necessarily a bad idea. I do have little desire to check every single program's website to see if a forum is offering program updates though...

Saves checking out lots of individual sites. :cool
Lots of other good stuff there as well, as you know. :major

Actually, if you are a Piriform forum member (which probably everyone is who downloaded the winapp2.ini file from the Piriform forum), you can subscribe to the winapp2.ini topic, and receive an email notification when it has been updated.

What is this file, what is it's intended purpose? CCleaner tells the user when it is opened if there is a new 'version' available. Is this the update of all updates for CCleaner? Like update Tuesday?

CCleaner knows what to clean from three different sources:
    1. definitions hardcoded into CCleaner itself
    2. external definitions file winapp.ini
    3. external user definitions file winapp2.ini
winapp2.ini is an optional file, and will only be used if present (of course).
The winapp2.ini file contents have mostly been developed by Piriform forum users. This is where the file can normally be downloaded from.

And this is the file that will be installed by "CCleaner Enhancer".

P.S. winapp2.ini will not be updated when a new CCleaner version is installed; it is the users' responsibility.

I sent off an email to the author of CCleaner Enhancer and this is what he replied:
Therefore for anyone who has followed this thread with it's pro's and cons and still want to get this software, it's available here at MG. http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Enhancer_d6547.html

I have not tried this software, but as I understand it, it will go to its homepage (that has been suspended) and download the latest winapp2.ini file.

So how can this software possibly work when it cannot download the (stolen) definitions file?

Would somebody please discuss the pros and cons of this winapp? What does it do, what does it help/allow the user to do?

Bring up CCleaner and compare your listed apps. to the attached thumbnail. That's pretty much the pro(s) from what I can tell. The one I downloaded had way more than that, which was the con. I didn't need 200+ apps. listed that I didn't have installed. But the winapp2.ini file is easily edited.

Do you mean the "CCleaner Enhancer", or the original winapp2.ini file?

I do not recommend "CCleaner Enhancer", as it
    1. has not been quite thought through how to handle future updates
    2. is not currently able to download updates at all, as its homepage has been shut down
As for the manual download of winapp2.ini (from the Piriform forum) - it has indeed hundreds of additional applications, as compared with the basic CCleaner. However, there may be bugs in it, and it's the users own responsibility to check for updated definitions.

In my view - it is for advanced users only.

Not true; I've ran it twice since Sunday and it updated both times.

I downloaded CC Enhancer and peeked into the winapp2 folder. I'm no programmer obviously but I noticed that AV Avast 4 is in there. I've got Avast 5. Would Enhancer clean Avast 5? Anyway IF it worked, what would it clean since I want to monitor if it cleans Avast 5?

    Attached pic to show.

BTW: I like it that Enhancer removes flash thingys. :-D

So it "cleans" these apps? I've never used the applications tab in cCleaner. But I just ran cCleaner, then changed to the apps tab, cleaned again, it found nothing.
Still don't get what it is for?

Yes, they're supposed to clean more apps than CCleaner. After downloading CCEnhancer it puts a winapp2 in the CCleaner program folder. Its got 200+ additional software programs in there with the automated instructions to clean software programs to what CCleaner already does. (So it adds programs to be cleaned that CCleaner doesn't have). It matches the programs you have installed and adds them to CCleaner GUI (?) to be cleaned. After downloading CCEnhancer you will see some of your installed software there, e.g. Google Earth, Paint.NET, Flash etc. etc.

Try it out. It's in Drive Utilities. If not happy with it, navigate to Program Files> CCleaner and just delete the winapp2 folder.

I'm no programmer so it's difficult for me to explain.

Thanks. I've used ccleaner for over 5 years now. And I'm a big fan of same. It goes on every computer I set-up or work on.

Personally I'll wait for the dust to settle on this enhancement and give it a try in a couple of weeks. Seems to have a bit of controversy about it.
