Every time I run CCleaner I receive an error message (cf. attached image). Why might I receive it? I have never opened MS Edge and I can’t recall the last time I used IE.

    OS: Windows 10

Is either Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge showing in the Apps section of Task Manager when you get this popup Mark?

You have to open the task manager and see if edge is still open and same with IE and shut them down and it will continue in what CCleaner was doing.

Microsoft Edge is, but not Internet Explorer.

Opening Task Manager is unnecessary. CCleaner will close them for you, as the pop-up says. That is not the issue. I am trying to find out why they are even open.

Either Edge is set to run at boot or something else is starting it. Suggest you download MS Autoruns and extract its files to a subfolder In Downloads. It doesn't install so double click Autoruns64.exe and put 'Edge' in the filter box. If it appears I suggest you remove the checkmark, restart and try CCleaner again. If it doesn't appear I'm at a loss to understand how it comes to be running - that doesn't happen here on any of four systems.

I put 'Edge' in the filter box, and it does not appear.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, don't include the quotes but, assuming that to be the case, can you confirm that Edge is showing in Apps in Task Manager but there is actually no open Edge Window? If that is the case it does sound like a system error, but I have no idea what or where. You could try the standard system file checker sfc /scannow, and if still the same then you could try the more thorough Tweaking.com Windows Repair.

I omitted the quotes. I also tried ""Microsoft Edge", without quotes.

    It is, yes.

    I've never opened the application.

    Will do.

I have run the standard system file checker sfc /scannow and it reported that there were no "integrity violations". I also ran CHKDSK and that, too, found no drive errors. At the moment, I cannot reproduce the problem. I have, however, updated CCleaner. I cannot say for certain but I suppose it is possible that was the resolution. I can only wait and see if the problem recurs.
