Ccleaner Invokes Selective Startup

    Hi,

My startup and shutdown has been getting slower and slower in Vista SP2 and has also started to hang periodically while starting up or shutting down.

I have been disabling numerous programmes using the Ccleaner startup option and was down to just Windows Sidebar, System Tray and MSE in my startup. While trying to resolve the startup shutdown and hanging problems I noticed that the system configuration had been changed to "selective startup". I know that this is big "No" "No" on this forum so I changed it back to normal startup and my computer shutdown and restarted with no problems and a host of errors have now been removed from the Event Viewer.

It can only be Ccleaner who has changed to selective startup as there are now about dozen start up programmes when I look in Ccleaner, however all of my slow startup and shutdown problems appear to be resolved. Vista was obviously wasting time trying to find files or programmes that were not available.

Any comments or advice on this would be appreciated.

    Axel

True- CCleaner, when used to disable startups, does invoke msconfig.
It's OK to use as a diagnostic to trouble shoot, but not as a permanent feature.
Just check and re-enable all in CCleaner as well. Incase...

    Cheers..

One I use, and love is:

    WhatInStartup v1.33
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/what_run_in_startup.html
Not available from MG, as yet. :(
    Description
This utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows starts up. For each application, the following information is displayed: Startup Type (Registry/Startup Folder), Command-Line String, Product Name, File Version, Company Name, Location in the Registry or file system, and more.
It allows you to easily disable or delete unwanted programs that run in your Windows startup. You can use it on your currently running instance of Windows, as well as you can use it on external instance of Windows in another drive.
WhatInStartup also supports a special "Permanent Disabling" feature - If a program that you previously disabled added itself again to the startup list of Windows, WhatInStartup will automatically detect the change and disable it again.
    System Requirements
This utility works on any version of Windows starting from Windows 2000 and up to Windows 7.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, doc Holliday.

Start > Run, type 'msconfig' (no quotes), press Enter - 'Normal' Startup should be listed in the 'General' tab of the System Configuration dialog.
