I'm real new to XP Home, as it has only been on the box for 2 wks.
One of the first things I did was install TweakUI for XP as I had good results from TweakUI on 98 and 98se.

One of the things you could do on 98 was select autorun for Audio CDs only and disable it for all other types of CDs.

On XP, I have figured out how to get it so most CD types will not autorun something, but I can't seem to find a way to prevent autorun CDs and Data CD (zips and exe's) from autorunning or opening an explorer window. If you turn off autorun in TweakUI, it turns it off for all types of CDs, audio included.

My question is, "Has anybody figured out a way to turn autorun off for data (file) type CDs and leave it on for Audio CDs like you could with TweakUI for 98se?"

I know I can hold down the shift key when inserting the CD, but that becomes a pain in the rear.

    Thanks

if you right click on your cd drive and then click properties there is some autoplay settings there.I think you need to do that without a cdrom in the drive.

I've been able to shut off autoplay actions for most all file types using the properties section for the drives. The problem is that autorun (ini or exe) cd's start and pure data cd's (i.e. my backups of downloaded shareware/freeware) open a drive window if I want audio cd's to autoplay.

In XP home you cannot shutoff autoplay for one type of cd and not the other. You can set the action taken for most types of files (i.e. video, mixed media ect.) but not for data only.

GPEDIT.MSC is not an option for users of XP Home, as is is not provided and from what I have found on the net, will not work with XP Home.

I guess I'm stuck with using the shift key each time.

Thanks for the replies. If anybody finds anything else, shoot me a line.

If you are into some registry editing you can change so it disables the checking for autorun.inf for data/program cds.

thanks snakefoot, tried your registry tip, and it does stop the checking for autorun, but audio cd's do not autoplay also for some reason.

Problem may be that XP Home treats the policies differently.

I guess I can live with what i've got, but I bookmarked the web site you posted and will do some testing.

You could check that Play is the default action for Audio CD's:

But I will try to experiment with it myself on WinXP as this tip has only been tested on Win2k. (Not been playing that much with the new Autoplay service "Shell Hardware Detection" delivered with WinXP)
