CD Drive not reading burned discs

    I've searched for a solution to this problem, but can't find anyone who has the same issue as me.

    What happened is my CD drive in my laptop stopped reading discs. It's an older one that was designed to run Windows XP Home. I bought an external drive thinking it was an issue with drive itself. But the external drive has all of the same problems! I can't even burn discs, they fail. I tried the external on a different computer, works fine. Any solutions here?

    1. Brand and exact model of laptop
    2. Version of Windows running on the laptop
    3. Burning software installed (name and version)
    4. Have you tried anything to fix this? Things like using a restore popint, uninstalling hardware and rebooting letting windows find new hardware, checking registry for upper and lower filters, etc.

    It's an HP ze4500. The problem has nothing to do with windows or any other software. I forgot to mention, I can boot the computer with a non-burned disk, but I can't boot it with a burned disk, before Windows even takes control.

    If the disk is non-burned then it is blank. I don't think anything will happen if you try and boot a computer with a blank disk.


    Do you perhaps mean a commercial disk versus a self-burned disk?

    3. I'm using Nero Burning Rom free edition, most recent version.
    4. Everything in 4 is related to windows. The problem exists outside of windows, I know this because the computer's pre-windows boot can't read from burned discs either. I have reinstalled windows and started completely fresh, and the problem still exists everywhere and with any drive I plug in.
