CD Drive not showing

Hey,
recently, and out of the blue my CD-RW/DVD drive has suddenly stopped being shown in "My Computer" . I've gone "System" and "Device Manager" and it gives me a code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing" . I've tried updating them, but nothing worked. I contacted tech support for the maker of my computer and they told me to do what the trouble shooter in windows did, which didn't work either. So, a New CD drive is on the way because they think that's the problem. But now I'm not entirely sure it is. My BIOS recognizes the CD drive, and I've tried to reinstall the drive, no luck. I read on Microsofts support about removing certain registries, but I'm kind of weary about doing that because this is just out of the blue and I havent uninstalled anything recently . Any suggestions if the new CD drive dosen't solve the problem either? Thanks in advance.

Yes I would do whats mentioned in this KB article relating to Upper and Lower filters http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553/

The steps also tell you how to backup that registry key they want you to delete, so your covered if you need it back ( once you have highlighted the registry string in step 3, steps 4 and 5 are how you export it to backup )

You could also try a new of different IDE cable, sometimes faulty ones cause errors like this, also test the drive on the cable on its own IF its shareing the cable with another item.

Are the jumpers on the drive set right position, especially if its sharing a cable with another item,

1 Drive on cable = jumper to Master or CS
2 Drives on cable = 1 Drive to Master and 1 Drive to Slave
