Cd-Drive Not Working - At all!

ok, the problem is, this cd-drive seems to be scizophrenic, sometimes it'll be perfectly fine, say if your playing a game, but if you exit, when you try to go back in, the cd-drive seems to not know that there is a disc in the drive.
this problem is on my brothers just-about-week-old freeline computer. he had this problem before (day after he got it) where the drive stopped working, and it seemed to be down to spyware or similar because after running spybot and clearing a couple of suspisious items in hijack this, it started working again, but now, nothing is working to get the drive going again! (this also happened on my mother's computer, couldn't get it to go again) dunno whether there is any correlation between the 2 incidents, as the 2 computers are on the same wireless network, but my computer is also on the network and has never received any problems like this.
I hope someone can think of something that will get the drive working again

Hi, a couple of things to ask - What other device's do you have on the pc. What motherboard etc.

 

It's one of the new freeline slimline models, but unfortuneately my brother wouldn't wait and took it back today ¬.¬
