CD drive not working properly

My cd drive 'NEC DVD_RW ND2500-A' has stopped allowing me to burn cds (i only use WMP for this). This has started happening since i installed a new version of XP pro. I can still play CDs and DVDs, just not WRITE them.

In the drives properties box the 'recording' tab had disapeared. I have managed to bring this tab back by editing the registry and changing the Drive Type DWORD Value from 3 to 1. This brought back the recording tab and allowed me to re-enable recording on the drive, but WMP is still telling me to 'connect a burning device' and the 'write these files to cd' function through my computer is telling me there is no cd in the drive when there actually is.

Another thing baffling me is the extra drive that has appeared 'SUO299K FHV909S SCSI SDRom Device'. This is listed next to my NEC drive and appears in my computer, although i only have one drive connected.

I have uninstalled BOTH through device manager, rebooted, and both reappear, with me having to edit the registry AGAIN to bring the 'recording' tab back. I even tried new firmware but no luck.

I don't know what else to try! Help please! :cool

(i should maybe mention that i had formatted my hard drives before installing new XP, and that i removed the IDE cables connecting both the HDDs and the CD Drive to the mobo. Could i have maybe got them mixed up when connecting to the mobo? the 2 IDEs connect right next to each other)

That sounds like a virtual drive. Do you have Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120, or Virtual Clone Drive installed?

That would explain the SCSI CDROM drive, although not why it only recently appeared.

As for the NEC drive failing, I had the same thing happen to me. I ended up RMA'ing the drive, since it developed a repetitive click sound. Do you notice any clicking when you insert a CD?

As such, I'm afraid I have no other advice. My drive was also an NEC that failed after a burn, so it could very well be dead.

Well to be honest, it might not have only just appeared, ive only really noticed it since this problem. Whats RMA'ing?

One thing i read on ur old thread was to try a different IDE ribbon. I will try this because mine looks abit bent and the end connected to the mobo doesn't look to clever. I'll try that and report back
