my cd drive is only good for one disk then it dies when a new disk is inserted. i have to go to device manager and uninstall it then reinstall it for it to work again. over and over. what is causing this? is it hardware or software? the drive works just fine (when it is working).

    any ideas?

It sounds like a software issue to me. If this is a fairly recently occuring problem, try a system restore to right before the problem started. Maybe look into a firmware update for the CD, a new chipset driver for the motherboard, and maybe even a new data cable for the CD drive. If possible, temporarily remove the drive and try it on another PC. Then you'll know for sure if it's the drive or if it's Windows.....
