CD drive will not accept Blank CD - keep getting an error msg

Ok I have the problem what when I insert a Blank CD into the CD drive that it will not read that Blank CD. It keeps telling me to instert a CD into the drive.

I can insert a CD that already contains information and it reads it just fine.

The computer that this is happening on is an HP Pavillion, Win XP Pro SP2.

Are you sure you actually have a CD burner? If you do, it's either failing or you need to update a driver for it.

 

Yes I have a CD burner as I used to be able to burn CD's.

The message I am getting when I put a Blank CD into Drive E it is "Insert a blank disc into Drive E"
When I put a blank CD into my Drive D which is labeled on the outside of the tower as "CD Writer Plus" it gives me the same message "Please Insert Blank Disc into Drive D".

How do I check to see if the burner is going bad? It hasn't been used excessively like every day or every week. I don't burn large quantity of things its mainly used to back up things like to save my Documents or pictures on a Disc that I don't want to loose.

I checked the driver updates thru windows and there was no updates available for that computer.

The best way to check if something has gone bad is to try and use it. Which you've done and it doesn't work. So there is a good chance it's the drive is failing, or the media you're using is bad. So try diffrent media and see if it likes that.

If it still doesn't work with diffrent writeable CD's, try uninstalling the drive complete from within windows and then reinstalling it. If it doesn't work after that chances are the drive is just broken. Although, there is a small chance it's a virus or ad program that is messing it up, it's not very likely though.

I also had a problem with a HP cd writer. HP told me that they have had a problem with their cd burners in the past. I removed the HP cd burner and went with another brand. CD burner was only 6 months old.

 

Probably obvious on my compaq the lens comes out with the cd tray,if you can get at it clean the lens.

 

Thanks I will look into it right now I decided to call my sis in law and see if she can take a look at it as there is more problems with it than just the CD drive. It has become very very very slow and its 512MB but feels like its got 64 MB as slow as it is.

So she is going to look at the CD drive problem as well and see what she can come up with. I didn't want to call her just for the drive problem but with the slow speed I decided to call her. As for the slow speed yes it had been defragged and cleaned up on a regular basis, and everything up to date. I even "dumped" the computer to start fresh and it was still slow and gets slower with each use it seems like.

Well anyhow, thanks for all the suggestions and the time and help I greatly appreciate it and when she takes a look at it I will post back as to what the CD drive problem was so that others can benefit from it.

Just wanted to let you know that after my sis in law ran her tests on the computer it showed that it did infact need a new Hard Drive.
