My DVD and cdrw drives are working poorly. When I try to burn a CD I get disc speed errors and you can just tell by the sound that its not working smoothly. I don't know where to start troubleshooting with CD drives, so any help would be great.

Oh, the disc speed errors have nothing to do with the cd speed/burner speed.

aite...download drivercleanerpro (its free and good), google it...and then boot into safe mode...use it to uninstall everything that hast to do with your dvd/cd drive...then boot into normal mode, and go to the manufacturer's website and download the correct driver...or use everest home edition, it will tell you your cd /dvd drive model and you can click on it and download drivers from the right website.

    Everest says I have a ARTEC WRA-WA48

any idea where i can find artec's site/drivers. - The only place I had any luck was on an ad-dominated website that I didn't feel like "signing up" for.

Here is the Artec website and downloads page http://www.artecusa.com/tech-support-download.html sadly not going to do you much good at these days ever since DOS/Win3.1, the OS has handled the drivers for CD drives.

What Burning app are you using?

    What are the exact errors?

Did this just start happening or has it been like this since you got the PC?

You could delete the CD drives from Device Manager > reboot and let the OS pick them up again..

What would be wrong with the official Artec support and driver page?

What Burning app are you using?/What are the exact errors? - I'm using Nero 6, and I tried a few different ones off download.com to check if it was just nero. Same error on all of them... says disc speed error, I can post the error log from nero here if that would do you any good.

Did this just start happening or has it been like this since you got the PC?

The CD drive has always kind of been a pain, but a simple restart always fixed any problems it had, and it doesn't anymore.

Well, the driver idea obviously doesn't work, deleting it from the device manager didn't work, and trying different programs didn't work.

    crap drive maybe?
slave/master have anything to do with it?
The drive does work for installing games/playing music cds, its just the burning part it can't do.

Any help would be appreciated greatly otherwise I'm orderin a new one off pricewatch.

    Thanks.

Yup, I'm having the same problem!

I've a Compaq Presario SR1109UK PC with Win XP home edition and SP2. I took me a lot of time to find out that, while it burns audio or data CDs ok, it can't burn DVDs. I bought an Artec CD/DVD burner second-hand (£50) and it burnt a few DVDs ok before it started acting strangely.

I used Record Now v.7, running the on-board E: drive as the source and the Artec as the F: drive as destination. It would start to burn the disc ok, get to close to the end and then say there was a problem. Then it would gob the disc out and I'd have another useless disc! It did this eight times on the trot which stacks up to a few quid!

Is this a driver problem, a software problem or a hardware one? Any ideas would be entertained right now as there's nowt going on but the rent!
