    Hi everyone!
    I've got a Toshiba "Satellite 2675DVD" laptop with a toshiba "sd-c2302" cd/dvd rom combo drive. I'm using Win98se.

Until last night it worked perfectly, but now it'll only read DVD's. CD's of any type (burned, OEM, etc) aren't being read at all, and when in My Computer or Windows Explorer it shows that there's a blank disk in the drive when anything but a DVD is inserted. DVD's are read and played perfectly. I use Cyberlink PowerDVD 6 to play them.

According to Toshiba, there's no special driver used to opperate their cd/dvd drives. Well, I found several on Driverguide and some other driver websites and tried them all with no better results, so I re installed the generic windows one. Still only DVD's......

The only change I made anywhere before this started was to use the diagnostic tool that came w/PowerDVD to enable(?) DMA, but I went back and un-checked the DMA box to make it the same as before. Still nothing.

If anyone can offer some advice, it would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

Was there a "Restore" option in PowerDVD? Did you right click on the CD and try to open?

You might want to read the info on the following link. It refers to problems after removing Adaptec EZ CD creator but I have found other times when the same problem exsisted when Adaptec wasn't ever even there. It has to do with the upper and lower filter values being the same which doesn't allow reading a disk. In most cases you don't need the values defined at all though some software sets the values anyway.

Bold Eagle; did the restore with no effect. The tray opens & closes OK.

Shnerdly; Read another article basically the same, but for WinXP. I didn't have either of the apps, (Roxio EZ CD creator or the other one) on the laptop, ever. I haven't uninstalled any software in a long time either.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

    Any other suggestions?

    Randy

Well, thought I'd poke-around in the registry and look for the entries that the artical Shnerdly referred me to, but the artical was for Win2000, not Win98se, so NG. The other one I've looked at was for WinXP, also NG. Does anybody know of one for Win98se? I've had no luck finding any on the MS Knowledge Base pages.
BTW, I'm receiving NO error messages. The drive simply no longer reads anything BUT DVD's.

    Thanks again,
    Randy

OK, did some snooping and found the correct registry key.
    For Win98 users, it's in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CURRENTCONTROLSET > SERVICES > CLASS > {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ..

I deleted it out and rebooted but the drive still only reads DVD's.

Maybe I'll take a break and watch a DVD..... ;-)

    Hey! Guess what?
While in DOS, the cd/dvd drive works fine! I put in a disk and typed "dir" at the c: prompt, and it displayed the contents of the disk.

    Thanks for the replies.
I got frustrated last night and re-formatted the HD and put Win2k on it. Everythings fine now.

    Thanks again for your help,
    Randy
