I am running windows 7 ultimate and have a CD/DVD problem that started yesterday.

when i power the PC up i can open the drive but after it has been running for about 10 minuets it will no longer open unless i re-start??

I have checked in device manager for drivers and they are up to date, I uninstalled the driver and restarted the PC but it is just the same, I have cleaned out all junk and registry files with CCleaner, i have run Mbam but nothing seems to help.

does anyone have any ideas please.

Have you tried a paperclip/pen in the "release hole"?

How is it sitting in the case, could it be slightly blocked (pushed back) and not be "easily opened"?

    Hi Eagle.
It's not restricted in any way but more something in the system is stopping it from opening.

If i re-start the PC it works perfectly for about 10 min and then it is just as though the driver is no longer there.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Reminds me of the way an optical drive would disappear with Windows 98 - if the problem still persists, you might play around with the DMA and IDE Controller settings...

I am very careful where i set my coffee now :-o

I have been out most of the day seeing my surgeon (he's gonna cut some more bit off next month) but i will try it first thing in the morning and let you know how it goes.

I could not wait so i tried it and it is just the same.

I am not 100% but i suspect it is something to do with my VMworkstation as it seems OK until i start that up, tomorrow i will give it some serious looking at.

Thank for the input and anymore suggestions (no matter how strange) are welcome.

I would say it is the VM Bill, can you see your drive mounted in Ubuntu, if so then right click the drive icon and choose 'unmount'. I use VMWare Player but it should work the same. Took me a couple of reboots before I figured it out.;)
