    Hi guys,

Im just about to quit on this one.

I have a laptop here that im trying to fix, the problem is the CD/DVD drive is not showing up in the computer folder of vista.

I am aware of the "upper, lower filters fix" but sadly that does not work in this case and there are no "filters" to delete in this case.

I have restored the machine to factory and no luck

I have flashed the BIOS to the latest BIOS and no luck

The CD/DVD option also does not show up in the device manager so its not just a matter of updating drivers.

The drive is fixed in securly to the laptop and it has power going to it. i even unscrewed it and popped it in again to see if windows would detect it but no such luck.

when you put a CD in the drive spins accordingly but nothing happens in windows.

i think thats a bout it, i dont know what else i can try.

any help would be greatly appreciated

    thanks

Is the optical drive showing up in the BIOS as enabled?

hi and thanks for your reply.

    the BIOS is "PheonixBIOS"

I dont know where to go in it to see if CD/DVD ROM is enabled or disabled.

the only refrences I see in it to any CD/DVD ROM drives is that i can select it as a boot device, but i think thats just a generic setting, i cant find anything in the BIOS that relates to my exact drive and the options in it are very limited.

First here's the information if device manager does not show the drive.

As far as the BIOS, I can't tell you exactly where to look. Everytime I need to look in the BIOS (and every computer has it set up differently), I methodically go through all the tabs.
Don't worry if you accidentally chage something. One of the options is to exit without saving changes. That means, if you clicked something you should not have, the computer forgets what you've done.

If you have any linux live CDs handy, put one in and see if the computer will boot from it. If it does, then it has to be something in windows not a hardware problem.

    thanks for your reply man,

i tired that upper and lower filters fix first a few days ago to no avail.

i cant reinstall drivers though device manager because there is no cd/dvd section to expand.

im startin to go out of my mind on this one lol :confused

The restore to factory should have fixed it. I would have been inclined to think it was dead yet you see it spin up briefly so something is working.

Sorry, I'm as clueless as you are as to what is going on.

You've got nothing to lose - go for another factory restore.
