Go to your Device Manager; right click the CD drive and select Uninstall. Restart the PC and let Windows re-install the device. That should do it ;)

A red X usually means the device has been disabled. If you right-click it in the device manager and select "Enable" it should work. If not, try right-click, choose Properties, Driver, and see if you can roll back the driver. Have you tried to boot to a CD, or boot to a DOS floppy and see if you can read a CD in DOS? This would tell you if the drive itself was bad, or if it's a Windows issue. If you can boot to a CD, try a safe re-install of Windows "over the top" of itself; you won't lose any data or programs this way. Have you tried using System Restore? Try rolling back to before the problem started. You can also try re-installing your chipset software; it should be available for download from your motherboard manufacturer's web site. Well, here's a bunch of different things for you to try. Let us know how it goes ;)

Hmmmm.... that's odd. It may be a resource/IRQ allocation problem. Reboot the PC and go into CMOS (or BIOS; most PC's will display something like "Press F2 to enter setup" or maybe "[Del] for system setup") and poke around looking for 'Plug and Play OS Installed' or maybe 'PnP Operating System'. If it's enabled, disable it. If it's disabled, enable it (or if it says 'Yes' change it to 'No' and vice-versa). Be sure to save your changes, and reboot. Also, if you haven't already, re-install your chipset drivers or chipset software. I think I mentioned it in an earlier post. It should be a free download at your motherboard maker's web site. When the CD is working (regardless of if the sound is working or not) put your XP CD in the drive and click Exit when the blue Windows XP window opens. Click Start > Run and type cmd and press enter. You should now be in a black "DOS" window with a command prompt. At the prompt type sfc /purgecache and press enter. Let that complete. Now type sfc /scannow and press enter. This step can take up to (and over) an hour, so be patient. You may have to click "Retry" numerous times during this step; it's normal. When it finishes, type exit and press enter. Remove the XP CD and reboot the PC. I hope some of this stuff helps! Please post your results.

NOTE: there is a space between the "sfc" and the "/" in the commands above....
