For some reason, my CD/DVD Drive/Writer suddenly stopped reading ANY kind of disk. I can view the contents of a disk by double-clicking the drive in My Computer, but it won't read or play any type of disk. What could be causing this? My first thought was a driver issue, but I'm not sure. Any help/suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hello and welcome to MajorGeeks,
Could you give us a little bit more information, so wecan help you the best we can.
First, how old is the computer your using.(It might have just died if it's too old.)Second, are any of ur CD/DVD's scratched or damaged?( If there are any deep scratches on them it will interrupt the laser from the eye of the drive, causeing it t not read properly). What type of CD/DVD drive is it?

The laptop itself is around 5 years old, but the DRIVE is less than a year old. None of the disks I try are screatched or damaged. I've tried using a "cleaning" disk (the ones that automaically clean the laser lens), but that has no effect. As for type, it is a DVD/RW-R. Also, I had a new hard drive installed about the same time the new DVD-ROM was installed. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, MS Update, Glary Utilities PRO (my tech gave me a lifetime license!), Revo Uninstaller (awesome program, IMHO), and CCleaner (for wiping free space ONLY; works a lot faster and better than Glary's wiper). All of these programs are up-to-date. Not sure if this information helps, but I figured it couldn't hurt and might save time later on.

    Greetings, MamaBear1968.

Couple of quickies I'll throw into the mix:

    1. Do you have the same symptoms when you boot into Safe Mode?

    2. Can you boot to the drive?

    3. Is the drive doing anything at all (LEDS, spinning, etc.), and is it seen in BIOS?

#3 Yes, it makes sounds like it's trying to load. Actually, I think I MAY have solved the problem. It's so simple I'm almost embarrassed. I use Media Player Classic-Home Cinema tom play DVDs. Well, long story short, I was messing around withn the auto-play function and thought "Maybe I should try opening the VIDEO-TS file with that." That's what I did and DVDs (some but not all) will load. Still having issues with audio CDs (I have to tweak Media Player 11) but we'll see what happens. Note to gman863: I downloaded and ran Fix It. No major surprises (it didn't fix it; saved the report if you want to see it.) but I LOVE the program. Thanx for the heads-up!
