My NEC DVD RW ND-1300 A drive no longer reads any type of disk. I have completed the upper and lower fix (not present). When I load a disk it seems to work then nothing. When I click on the drive I get the "Please insert a disc in drive w:" Any suggestions?

    Thanks...

Easy fix but will cost you money. Try an external drive.
Yours could have bitten the dust if it won't read anything. Sometimes the CD part works but not the DVD but it sounds as if both of your lasers don't work.

I bought an external portable DVD burner from NewEgg for $30 and I'm happy with it. Not all my computers have DVD burners so this allows me to burn DVDs from all the computers and if a burner stops working, I can use this instead of the internal optical drive.

Mine is similar to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=portable_dvd_drive-_-27-130-063-_-Product
It has two USB plugs. If an external doesn't have a power adapter, then be sure it has two USB plugs to supply enough power when you are burning.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, rbasp.

One other thing you can try real quick is to attempt to boot to the optical drive. Insert a bootable disk (a Windows or Linux disk, a restoration or repair disk, etc.) and restart the computer. Enter your BIOS setup and ensure that the optical is the first boot device.

If the computer will boot to the optical, then some Windows glitch or 3rd-party software is causing the problem. If, however, the drive will not boot, then it's likely that the drive is bad.

Also: is this the same machine as in your current Malware Forum thread?

    Caliban,

Yes this is the same computer as in the other forum but this problem proceeds the malware problems. I will try your suggestion of booting with an optical disk.

    Thanks..

Nothing worked. I got one disk with movie files to show up on the drive but could not open it. Off to the store tomorrow to buy an external.
