gateway mx6441 running window xp media center edition version 2002 service pak 3. phillips dvd + rw sdvd8441 as drive E:
I had severe malware and trojan problems 2+ months ago used forum entries to delete the problems. The cd/dvd is now showing in my computer. properties shows it as there and working properly. if I manually open the drive (paper clip in little hole to open) and insert a disk nothing happens. Windows media player and or other programs (itunes etc...) cannot play cds or dvds. properties will not populate disk info...
i believe that through the fixing of my problems i may have deleted some registry entries and possibly some sys32's and or something else...help... I have exhausted all the possible generic helps online, ie; deleting upper and or lower filters...etc...

    Hi Lend,

No driver or data cable is needed to open the tray with the button. Only the power connector (4 pin) is needed. You either had the power plug fall out or the drive is defective.

    Good Luck, Jim

Thanks Jim. I just replaced the drive and it worked fine until the virus removal. This is a laptop and the drive slides into a fixed slot with all the pins aligned. Any other thoughts??? Maybe the drive died...I've rechecked installation and it is installed properly the weird thing is it shows up but does nothing...

    Hi again Lend,

Unless there is something wrong with the power connections to the drive I think you now have a bad one. I have a couple of those in the junk box. Never got around to fixing them. The only difference between laptop and std that I know is that with std the button causes a motor to run to unlatch the tray and move it out and laptop only energizes a solenoid to release a catch and a spring moves it out.

    Luck, Jim

    Good Luck, Jim
