Hi I posted one before and finally just installed a new cd/dvd burner drive. Short version my burner wouldn't burn only partially and I was getting a "secondary drive failure". I have a Pent IV Dell 8200 512 ram. Its a 2 bay set up, one for CD/DVD R and the other was the burner. So I replaced the bad burner (I thought) with a Pioneer internal DVD/CD writer DVR 710. I do know about cable select so that when I installed, I installed and placed the jumper according to the illustration. Guess what? Still doesn't burn. And if I play in either drive it starts in the middle of the CD and finishes in the middle of the CD. In the meantime, the CD/DVD R bay is roaring like a train. The burner is quiet but doesn't burn. Anybody have any answers because Im going a little nutz over this.

Hi there, You say you did the cable select, - did you set the burner as master, and the reading drive as slave ?- This gives best results.
Also Is the burner on the end of the cable, and the reading drive , on the midway connector?- this usually works better.
If both are set to master, or, if both are set to slave , windows will play up.

I did I set up just as it was originally. The cd/dvd R was the slave and the burner was the master. I have a sneaky suspicion the CD/DVD R is going out just because of the roar and vibration. Which might explain why its not reading burn CD's and also starting in the middle. But it doesn't explain why my shiny new burner starts in the middle. I wondered if it might have to do with the fact the burner is dual layer? OR big or you ll notice, altho I followed the instructions for the cable select jumper set up, it was different from the original. But the pin set up wasn't the same as the original so I followed Pioneers instructions. I m not getting window errors. Actually no error messages at all. Just the weird start in the middle thing.

Have you tried disconnecting the older drive, altogether, and see if the burner works, then.
You might , otherwise need to update a driver, by going to on-line for the pioneer rrw.
Hopefully someone else can pick up this thread, if you need more help, as I am off now, unfortunately.
