CD/DVD ROM found (sometimes)

OK, I just upgraded to a Writemaster 16X DL DVD burner. I replaced a 6X NEC single layer +/_. Now for the problem. I can boot my computer and the drive will not show in the system. Its like it isnt installed, cant even get the computer to find it using the hardware configuration stuff in control panel. But... I can simply reboot the thing and it will show up and work fine untill I shut it off again (computer) This is a nag problem I guess. I went to the Writemaster website and got the latest flash for the drive (its Light Scribe also) and my Bios is up to date. AS Rock motherbord (Dream AL800) P4 DC 2.8Ghz. 1.5 G Ram, XP Pro SP2. I can put the old NEC back in the system and the problem stops. I am beginning to think the drive is just flaky. Oh there are no errorreports in the system logs when the thing fails to load.
