I have a Sony CD/DVD burner and player and it plays both DVD's and CD's choppy, the sound is choppy, i can rip the CD's and the audio plays fine that way but directly from the cd the sound is choppy as well with the DVD's i cant figure out whats wrong, the drive is only a few months old, anyone know what may be the problem? thanks

have you tried a different player? (like if you're using winamp, did you try windows media player?)

have you swapped the drive out with a known working one?

    also what OS/CPU/RAM/sound card etc?

Yeah it does the same thing for different types of players. I got the new drive for christmas and had just a regular CD/dvd player before that and the CD's always played fine but DVD's after maybe 15 minutes or so the sound would start to get choppy and i'd have to hit pause and then play again and then it would be fine again for a while, i thought maybe the driver was just dusty or dirty or something. I ended up getting the new CD/DVD burner and it was perfect at first no problems but then a few months ago all DVD's and CD's play choppy all the time now, i cant figure it out, it cant just be dirty, the things new. I have a new creative 5.1 soundblaster live Sound card installed. Any thoughts?

read the announcement at the top of the forum and post all your specifications, have you updated your videocard drivers lately, also you could try updating the firmware of your drive, its hard to tell what could be causing the slowdown without the rest of your computer specs :)

No not at all, first thing to do is to download the drivercleaner from ati,or use drivercleaner pro available here at MG in the drivers section, read the readme and follow the instructions to the LETTER then download the latest videocard drivers from ati, known as catalyst. :)

Do files played directly from your hard drive do this, or only from the optical drive? (CD, DVD drive)

Use the Test Hardware feature located in Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel.

Check and make sure that DMA is enabled for all your drives, and there are no errors in Device Manager.

Try checking out and installing any possible firmware upgrades for your cd/dvd drive from the website of your drive's manufacturer.

Yeah it only does it from the drive, if i rip the cd to my computer the audio works perfectly.

Check the connections on the back of the drive.

What cables do you have connected and where?
