Any of the above that I put into my comp is not working as a DVD writer. Put in a blank DVD and it is recognised as a cd, with 0 allocation and 0 space. I am running XP Pro and the 2 DVD RW's that I have tried both run NERO. Have downloaded all the updates and contacted NERO support, but nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong??????? Any help would be appreciated as I am ready to prime the shotgun and blow the whole lot to pieces.

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

You don't need drivers for optical drives, Windows has native support.

Is the drive displayed correctly in My Computer and Device Manager?

Does the Nero Info Tool report any errors? You can post the log here as an attachment if you like.

Don't copy and paste the log, post as an attachment only please.

Hi, Thanks, have attached what I think is what you want. It shows up correctly in my computer until I insert a blank dvd, then it changes to cd.

Does it actually play the DVD correctly though, and is it listed okay in Device Manager?

What happens if you try to burn a DVD?

One quick thing I noticed in the log you attached is that you don't have DMA on for the Master TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U drive.

DMA should be on for both your hard drive/s and CD/DVD drive/s.

Apart from that, everything else looks OK, and Nero is detecting it as a DVD writer.

What I suggest you do is download and install Everest Home Edition (freeware) from here, then use it to check what hardware you have and update your motherboard drivers.

Once you have installed the latest compatible drivers, then make sure that DMA is enabled for your DVD drive. (In Device Manager, Control Panel, then under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, double-click the Primary and Secondary IDE Channel and make sure you have DMA if available selected)

Can't burn a dvd at all, have attached view of my computer when blank dvd is in drive, as you can see it comes up CD. It does play DVD's though, so it's almost like it doesnt recognise that it's a writer also. Had to change the secondary ide as you suggested, but it hasnt helped any. As for updating I'm not sure how (feeling very blonde at the moment) , and with the everest thingy I have no idea what I am looking at. Did go to gigabyte website (motherboard) but they dont seem to have any updates. And in Device manager it reckons that it couldnt find any better matches than what I already have. Sorry for being such a pain, and thanks for all your help.

Maybe I should just shoot me

I'm convinced that your problem is because of motherboard and chipset drivers.

I suggested Everest, as it tells you what your hardware is, and provides hyperlinks that take you to the manufacturer's site, where you can locate the latest driver/s.

Relying on the drivers supplied with your hardware, or on Windows supplying drivers won't give you the latest or best driver.

Trying to update via Device Manager or Windows Update for drivers is usually a waste of time.

There isn't much to installing a DVD or CD burner, as long as your motherboard drivers are okay, Windows does the rest.

There is really very little that you have to do.

you should also update the firmware for your dvd burner in addition to your chipset drivers.

Okay, managed to find the motherboard driver, 'cept they want money to go with it. Downloaded SIS 651 and SIS 315, One came up with some flash thingy and the other said that it could not find drivers and was terminating. ARRRRGGGGHHHHH. Mayhap it's time to employ a sledgehammer. Thanks anyway.

Don't confuse motherboard drivers with a Bios flash. Two seperate things.

I wouldn't suggest a Bios flash, while updating your motherboard drivers is usually a good idea.

What is the exact model of your motherboard and maybe someone can find them for you?

After the GA-8SIMLH, is there a letter after it, or a revision number? EG rev 4.0 etc

Anyway, without that, there are a few different models.

You might be able to locate it HERE.
