I am running Win XP and recently installed a replacement motherboard Asus A7N8X until today had a few problems with USB ports not being recognised which I managed to resolve and I have been able to read and write to
both of my IDE CD/DVD RW units. They are recognised by explorer and "My Computer" and will both read cds and DVD but when I try to write to blank discs, the system does not recognize that there is a disk in the tray. I have checked in device manager that the Write function is enabled and this seems to be OK. Running out of ideas and any suggestion gratefully received

Go into Device Manager and under the cd dvd section uninstall any real opticals in there (leave virtual drives alone like daemon tools) and reboot the pc.

Hi Staff Sergeant, thanks for the advice. I tried un-installing both drives and re-booting but the results are as before. Any further suggestions appreciated'

    Hi

Was the change in motherboard a like for like one? or is this a different motherboard than previously installed?

I would re-install the chipset drivers, then run this HERE to clear the Upper and Lower filters as these can cause issues with CD/DVD read and write, do reboot once done.

Thats a great link for so many, Halo.
I always remember the upper and lower filter bit, but the link saves practical novices going into the registry. I had seen and used other fixit tools from Microsoft, but the links are there for many other fixit appliances

What program are you using to try to write to the discs? Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about Windows not recognizing the blanks. Try using a 3rd party burning tool to burn something to a CD; I like BurnAware and ImgBurn; both are free and both will burn to CD or DVD. I'm not sure, but I think if you have autoplay/autorun disabled, that may prevent Windows from popping up the "a blank disc has been inserted, what do you want to do" message.

Also, you can download a reg "script" by using this Major Geeks link for the fix Halo suggested above; use the "Second Method".

Thanks, Halo - I just picked up one of the cheap new Asus desktops, was going to do the restore disks, and the exact same symptoms as bg9208's popped up - wasn't going to worry about it (just use a USB drive to store an image), but that linked worked perfectly: problems found and fixed...

    Cheers! :drink

Hi I have an Asrock N68C mobo running XPPro SP3 and a new problem has developed. After running fine for a few months, suddenly my CD/DVD RW refuses to write although it will read data disks without problem I have run the Microsoft
Fixit and get the message that the hardware is not capable of writing. I have uninstalled and rebooted to no avail.
I have also swapped my NEC drive with a LiteOn dvd/rw removed frop a PC which was working and I get the same message from FixIt.
I posted this problem yesterday but unable to find the thread today.

    Help and suggestions much appreciated
