I have a weird problem, my cd's/dvd's will not read in explorer, but they read fine in isobuster. Autoplay isn't working, nothing works unless I extract the files from the cd with isobuster which is bs. How can I fix this?

How about Safe Mode? Does this issue happen with application CDs, too?

same thing, doesnt matter what cd it is, it won't read. I know the cd drive is fine because it's not even old and I can boot up cd's fine from bios.

Note my screenshot. Navigate through regedit to find the same info about your own CD drive, then make a screenshot and post it here.

I flashed my 8O2S to the 832S. Made no difference.

deleted both, same thing, redetected though. Went back to regedit and checked and now there is only 1 drive showing, which is good I guess, but the problem still remains.

    is this XP SP1, Sp2, or SP3?

Also what is the error, verbatim, that you get when attempting to browse a CD?

JIC you missed it, what is the error when browsing, verbatim?

  15. fortmyerspolice

There is no error that comes up, it just read nothing. This is what happens when I put a cd in.

Well, it is transitioning from reading as a DVD drive to recognizing you putting in a CD ROM. Thats something, I suppose. If you double click it, does it open a blank window, or?

  17. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

blank window, another thing. When I click on a game or something that needs a cd, the drive spools up, but the app says it still needs cd.

Ok, one last question. Are there any errors whatsoever in Device Manager on this device?

  19. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

Nope no errors whatsoever. This device is working properly. :confused

Stop the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. Open services.msc. Highlight, then click stop.

What error do you get now when you try to view a CD?

  22. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

it was set to manual, wasn't on. Should I disable it?

  23. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Try disabling it. This should remove any blank window, and give us an error.

  24. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

No Difference, I disabled and stopped imapi. Should I restart the computer?

  25. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Yes. So it still popped up a blank window? Hmmmm, that shouldnt have been possible.

    Before you reboot though...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
Under Drives, look for your drive. Should only be one. Back this key up, then change the drive type to 1. Note the current value before changing.

Then if nothing changes, reboot and check again.

  26. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

Changed the key's value to 1, restarted. No difference. :cry

    Btw it was 2 before.

Stupid question. Right click and choosing explore does....what?

Please reverse the changes from earlier before we forget.

  28. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

Nada, nothing in there. But I do have a disc in there. Changed the value to 2.

    Isobuster reads the content fine

But will not extract, did I read that right? Is that because its a trial version, or is there an error?

  30. fortmyerspolice

    fortmyerspolice Private E-2

    No, it extracts everything fine.

Ok...I am about at my wit's end....how furstrating.

Open msconfig. Go to the services tab. Click on the box that hides all MS services. What is left by name, please?

  32. fortmyerspolice

    There we go

Ok, with that box still checked, click disable all. Then go to startup and disable all.

    Reboot.

If it doesn't make any change to the situation, go back to msconfig and put the settings how you had them before.

Stopped everything. No difference, I'll leave everything off till we can get this damn problem situated, good sticky if we figure it out.

No kidding. If it werent for the fact that ISOBuster is extracting the data, I'd blame the hardware at this point.

Very bizarre. This is a long shot, but just about all I have left for now (I'll keep researching), but go to start, all programs, and choose Set Program Access and Defaults, and then choose the default setting, instead of custom.

I've written numerous guides on fixing CD/DVD problems, but this one takes the cake by far.

Yeah, nothing. I checked the cables too, they're tight. The drive is fine, it's damn windows. I tried system restore, no luck either. I did install the whole nero 8 suite though, got rid of it first chance i had. I had to manually uninstall it though as the installer was giving me crap. I got rid of all nero8 keys and files. Then reinstalled just nero 6 express that came with the drive. No change.

What changed since it last worked, if anything? Was it the Nero package that killed it?

Im trying to think of any other places that a filter driver would load. Most common are the filters, as I am sure you are aware. Then the enum key. But from there....hm. I might have to install XP into a VM just to play with it some more.

Well I came back from somewhere and haven't used the comp in about a week. I turn in on only to find chkdsk running, and fixing errors. Restarts, everything is fine. Must have been a power outage or something IDK. Then when I put in a disc I see nothing happens, so I try to fix it doing all the basic maintenance things. Nero 8 was installed when chkdsk was running. After that I restored the comp to an earlier point before the chkdsk came on. No change, so I manually uninstalled nero 8 package, no change. I followed a guide somewhere also on erasing the upper and lower filters from registry but that didn't change anything.

No worries, I can't believe something so stupid is ruining my whole day. I really don't want to reformat, this thing is running damn well, except for this stupid drive not reading.

Worse case scenario, I will run a VM install of Windows XP, and extract a good copy of drivers, and registry entries, and send them to you.
