When I try to burn a mp3 by using Nero, it tells me to insert a writable cd. SO I insert the CD and it tells me the cd r drive is empty to insert Cd, what does this mean?

First off if it's a CD-R drive it's not going to burn anything, it's a read-only drive. It has to be a CD-RW drive to burn a disc. If that was a typo then it would sound as if your having a drive problem in which case I would try another to confirm that.

Could be, how do I check to see what kind of drive I have? I thought they were all called Cd r? I think what I have is called liteon and the program I choose to burn from is nero. My drive was working fine before I got windows xp installed. Before this, i could burn any music files I had.

CD-R Drives were out before CD-RW drives and they were burners. I still have an old Plextor in service here. The way they marked them was like 32 X 8 which is 32 speed read and 8 speed write. The CD-RW drives are marked like 52 X 24 X 52 meaning 52 speed read and 24 speed write to RW disk and 52 speed write to R disk.

I'm not sure about the error you getting but does the drive read CD's OK. If so maybe it needs to be cleaned. If not maybe the drive has simply died.

In addition, CD-R's are writable, while CD-RW's are RE-writable.

For the original poster. Do you have a cdrom burner? I.E. CDRW/CDR, etc? What drive do you have?

Also, what type of media (cd's) are you using?
