    Hi

    Which Windows version and Service Pack are you using? (always helpful in case we need to look at settings etc)

    Using both media applications "may" have cause the upper and lower filters to become corrupt so thinking of that as an easy first fix follow the below

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

    You may have to re-install those applications if they don't work properly after doing the above.

    Hi

    So the Fixit didn't work or even looking manually in the registry using the Fix it for myself instructions on the page I posted did not list any Upper/Lower Filters?

    at this location in the registry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    If there is then delete as the guide mentions and reboot, but if not then check the cables to your CD/DVD drive and unplug and replug (if a desktop)

    So this machine a laptop or desktop?

    Is your optical drive a combo? I mean, does it read CDs and DVDs. If the DVds work but no CDs work, the drive could be had. CDs and DVDs use different lasers. The CD laser could die but the DVD laser will continue to work.

    True could have tough of that unless you use your DVD/Cd rom a ton for like burning and DVD watching then it could die after a while i guess.I have only one failed on my in the last 10 years But it does happen.

    If you do plan on buying a newer DVD rom drive i would go with LITE-ON DVD roms they work well and last a while.
