    Here's the scenario.

CD-ROMand DVD is detected by the POST and BIOS, but when booted up to winxp, the cd-rom and DVD drive cannot be seen from My Computer, Device Manager, Manage Compter, etc.. it's as if the entire drive is gone. Checked, unplugged and plugged the cd-rom drive from the mobo. When booted in safe mode, the cd-rom drive still does not appear in my computer, device manager, manage computer, etc..
I have an instalation disc but am not sure how to use this to repair any issues

    To make things short:

When booted in Bios Mode CD-ROM and DVD Appears
    When booted Normally: CD-ROM disappears.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Dave

I take it that when you say say it doesn't appear under Manage Computer that you looked under Storage>Removeable Storeage>Libraries?

You would be correct Sir I have looked everywhere I can think of.
I have tried to boot from CD rom with instalation disc as I thought I I can see it in Bios then maybe I can boot a insatalation dics and do a repair but The rom drive is bypassed even though I set it to boot in Bios, am thinking a reinstal

Reinstall not needed, Dave. This is a well recognised problem.

    But tell us first,
which version of Windows you have
and have you installed anything new lately, like another drive.

Possible reasons are overlapping drive letter assignments - curable in Disk Management
and drive filters problems - curable with a simple registry edit.

Are you comfortable with editing the registry?

I only re-installed Win Xp yesterday after having a severe problem on 1st April, but thats by the bye
    I have visited MicroSoft about this problem and have edited the registry as they suggested ie removing uplimit and lower limt to no avail problem still persists, I have had a look at my other computer and the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
menu after the + are very different should I just copy these over to the offending computer, I am happy to edit the register at the moment as it's seems to be broke anyway, but I would not normaly touch the registry without guidance
Don't touch stuff you don't know about that's my moto cos it'll come back and bite ya!!!!

I had already used the Mr Fix it thingy but have resolved this by taking a screen shot of the registry on my working computer and editing the data into the one that is not working which has resolved the issue the offending registry had a lot of what looked like machine code in it However I did not realize this was incorrect until I delved into a working registry
So I would like to thank all those who helped me resolve this issue. you gave the confidence to do something that I would not normaly have done. It's been a good experience and will help me in my Comptia course
    thanks agian Dave
ps got brownie points from the wife( she thought trip to computer shop)

    Glad its OK now.

For the future - you back up the registry in XP by setting a System Restore point.

Do that now if you haven't already done it.
