Cd-Rom and DVD-RW Drives not working in Win 98

Greetings,

I just bought a second desktop and installed windows 98 so I could play some old school games on it. Unfortunately my cd-rom and dvd-rw drives are not working. In device manager I have exclamation points next to my primary and secondary IDE controllers, both say (single fifo). One is a sony and the other is TSSTcorp. In the research I've done tonight it seems that windows is supposed to automatically detect these and install the drivers, however I can't install them because it wont read the drivers from the disk and can't find them in the windows folder. Both drives are recognized in the BIOS. From what I've read, it seems these companies don't make drivers because theyr're plug n play. Any ideas?

By the way, it's a Dell Dimension E310. I tried booting from the windows 98 cd with the boot from cd with cd-rom support option. It seemed to load the drivers fine but the gave me a dos prompt with A:\. I don't have a floppy drive even in it and it's disabled in BIOS.

When I tested to see if the real time drivers worked, they did. I can read the discs on dos. Unfortunately, when I tried to edit autoexec.bat and config.sys through dos I couldn't. I booted up and edited them, still no look. Any help?
