CD Rom can't read CD's

I recently reformatted my computer and installed Windows ME and then upgraded to Windows XP. My CD Rom will not work, I have tried deleting it from the device manager and restarting the computer. It finds the cd rom and says it's installed, but it is still unable to read any CD's.

 

There is a fix for this listed on the Microsoft site but I can't remember the error code. It has to do with a registry entry in the current control set telling the machine not to read the media in the drive. If you go to microsoft you can search for the error code it gives you and you should be able to find it.

 

OK...now I am really confused. The CD started working for a while and then stopped. Should I just buy a new cd rom.

 

Buying a new CDROM would be the easy way out, but the same problem could occur again, as most upgrades to XP from ME usually cause problems. If your CDROM worked fine before, then I would suspect the upgrade as the problem. A clean install is always the best. If you used an upgrade XP cd and have the original ME cd, an upgrade isn't necessary. A clean install can be made by inserting the XP upgrade cd and booting. At some point, it will seek a previous OS that allows upgrading and will ask for proof, if it can't find files on the hard drive. Just insert the ME cd, let it check and verify, remove it and replace the XP cd.
