It appears that the CD-ROM drive is a hit and miss lately of whether the computer will recognize a CD or not. We lately got iTunes installed for my son (got the iPod shuffle for Christmas) and he's been importing from CDs and buying songs from the iTunes store through gift/music cards. One day he imported a few CDs and after that, the computer has been sluggish or not responding to CDs (data, application, audio, etc.) being inserted.

Is there a software diagnostic tool(s) available to determine what's going on with the CD drive? Is there anything in the iTunes software that "takes" over CD handling?

Also will some CDs be accessible based on the processor speed? I'm not familiar with the Celeron speed to what is comparable to the Pentium class.

I would try a cleaning CD first, it may be dust.

 

Thanks,. Hadn't though of that. Did a search on cleaning CD and saw a site talking about cleaning CD drive and CDs themselves. I'll check that out.

Update .... Nero CD speed didn't do it either. It expects you to place a CD in the drive and perform tests. I need something to test the drive without a CD. Haven't done the cleaning thing yet, though.
