    Hello all, It's me again, this time however with a new problem. I have a Dell Laptop running Windows XP Home, and connect to the internet via DSL. Well I recently got iTunes, (Great Program) and wanted to take my favorite Dave Matthews CD put in my computer, rip it, and then put it on my future iPod. (Future means it's in the mail.) Well this afternoon I decided to do this. I placed the CD in my CD/RW-DVD Combo drive, heard that little spinning sound to let me know it's working, and then nothing happened. :confused: Spinning stopped and nothing popped up on the screen like usual to tell me what I would like to do with the CD Currently in the drive. So I said to myself, that's weird, what's going on? I decided maybe it was the disk. I cleaned it with some wipes and then tried it again. Popped it into the drive, listened to it spin and then stop again. Same as before. Thinking something must be up I went into My Computer to see if it would show up in the drive and I would try to open it from there, but there was no CD/ROM drive in the GUI's list of options. Very weird. I ran my virus software, I have AVG Antivirus 6.0 and it picked up nothing. Also ran both Spy-Bot search and Destroy and Ad-Aware to check to see if anything was picked up by either of these and still nothing. I am up-to-date on all my windows updates and just used my DVD Rom drive last night to watch my favorite movie. So I'm clueless as to why it's not there. If anyone is able to help that would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely, Drewzer03

    There are 3-4 different ways, but to save typing:

    Start, run, devmgmt.msc
    click OK.

    Expand the CD/DVD drive section. If its there, note if it has a '!' bang on it.

    Right click on the device properties.

    Under general tab, device status, post what it says.

    Ok Found it. I expanded the drive section and there was a "!" next to it. Not a good sign I take it. Also under the general tab on device status it states :"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) Click Troubleshoot to start the trouble shooter for this device." So should I run the troubleshooter?? I'll wait for your reply! Thanks!!

    Ok looking at Kodo's link now, however the warnings make me a little leary about messing with the registry editor. If I follow their directions I shouldn't have a problem correct? Also it says to back up the file before I edit it, well because I don't have a CD Drive and or a disk drive are there other ways of doing it?

    your hard drive is your disk drive. ;)

    open up registry editor and click on the top most icon that says "MY COMPUTER", then click REGSITRY from the menu bar and select "EXPORT REGISTRY FILE", when the box pops up, give it a name and choose a location (REMEMBER THAT LOCATION!!!) then on the bottom where it says RANGE and has two bullets, check the one that says "ALL". then export it the file. You will now have a full back up of the registry.

    the error comes up that it cannot delete that key and there was an error while deleting..What do I do??

    Look at the article again.

    You are not supposed to delete that key.

    I'm doing this or maybe I'm being a "moron" and just missing something

    Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
    To resolve this behavior, follow these steps: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

    7. Restart your computer.
