Ok, my cd drive has been malfunctioning and being a real pain, i insert any type of disk and it will not reconize its there at all, and if it is a files or music cd, usually it takes me like 10-20 tries to open the files up, i have to use explorer and usually it freezes then taking out the cd unfreezes it, and so on, but its not ever the disk i have tried many that worked before, this was a real big problem, i went into its options and whent to its drivers and i wasnted to fix it, but it said everything was working just fine~! i deleted the driver hoping it would later tell me i need to reinstall it, but i got nothing, now there is now cd-drive at all!~ omg im so mad, i need some major help and anyone who can help me i would be of great appreciation to, thx alot in advance~ Chris

Yeah and if you still need help finding the driver, what is the make/model and maybe we can point you to the right download location. Maybe you will find an updated driver?

It's a start. If you already re-installed the driver, and are still experiencing the problem, not many things cause this problem so don't worry. But let's start at reinstalling the driver first.

can you go to device manager and see the cd drive?

to get to device manager on xp right click my computer and click manage then select device manager.

Win98, right click my computer and click properties and click the device manager tab.

when your in device manager your should see something that says DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
and your should be able to expand that and see your cd rom model number

    1) Ironman beat me to it. Device Manager. First things first, go to Device Manager via IronMan's instructions, and post the make/model of the CD drive.

If you're feeling up to it, here are the first questions to pop in my head:

    2) We both asked if you reinstalled the driver. You did not respond so I assume no. You were able to uninstall the driver though, you said. Then how did you do that (did somebody else)?

    3) It stopped working suddenly, it sounds. Did anything happen right before? Somebody open the case? Somebody physically move the computer? Somebody install new software?

    4) I rarely see dying CD-ROM drives, but then again, you said you uninstalled the drivers, and restarted it to no avail, and all recent drives I think are plug and play, I'm wondering how old is it?

    5) Get a pen and write down Belarc Advisor. Major Geeks has a copy probably in their downloads section. It's a free download, and gives you a short but thorough summary of your computer, for stuff that you may have a problem with like video card memory, Belarc Advisor makes it a piece of cake. After this is all done, I recommend trying it, and you'll see what I mean.

i was asking earlier if you seen your cd drive in device manager because if your didnt your would have to reinstall it via Add New Hardware.

go to control panel, add new hardware, click next, select Yes and click next, look at the list and the cd drive should look like HL-DT-ST CD-RW or something with CD in it, click next
