CD-ROM Drive Missing

Last night my CD drive disappeared and my mouse quit working. I deleted the mouse & downloaded the driver again, now that is working fine. I've run several anti-virus, etc & they all come up clean. The Device Manager shows the drive, that it's working properly & there are no updated drivers to install. I did find an old post on here to follow some instructions at Microsoft for deleting the upper & lower filter values, which I did, rebooted, no results. The light for the CD player is also constantly on. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've been at this since 4:00 a.m.!

 

Have you at any time taken the ribbon off to the Rom as you may have connected ribbon wrong way around, usually the red stripe is facing you. If you have another Rom, swap the Master/Slave positions this sometimes works. Also go into Device Manager and uninstall the CD Rom then reboot. XP should then allocate a new driver, if not go to CD Roms manufacturers site and DL Driver. If still not corrected try another new ribbon.

 

I'm not sure what you mean about "upper and lower filter values". But anyhow try booting into Safe mode then deleting the drive from the device manager. Reboot and allow it to redetect the drive.

If that doesn't work try cleaning the laser with a proprietry cleaner which you should be able to get from your local PC shop.

And if all else fails you may well have to buy a new drive.

 

Thanks for your responses. I didn't get a chance to get back on here & post that the problem has been resolved. I had a tech walk me through about 20 things, none of which worked. I had unplugged every cable, power connection, etc. We had a bad storm last night & the power went out. When the lights came on, everything was working fine! Still scratching my head
