Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2000MHz
    Memory: 1024MB
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT Custom

    Windows XP Professional (5.1.2600), SP2

My problem is that if there is a disk in my CD-ROM drive or DVD drive, when my computer attempts to start it fails. If I attempt to put a disk into either drive once my computer has booted up explorer.exe crashes and doesn't reboot it's self until the drives are empty. I have no data on my CD-ROM or DVD drives as they permit no access.

Please state if you need more data. What are your suggestions?

    P.S.
I think one of the two drives are dead personally but I need to be certian.

Check your bios settings as it would seem there is a conflict in that it's trying to boot from the cd/dvd media.

My BIOS has locked me out on a dual layer password system.

It's a Phoenix BIOS and all override passwords have failed.

You have to jump the pins on the mobo to reset the passwords ....may be able to do a reset by removing the cmos battery for like a half hour.

Explain how I would accomplish this.

Then more questions ...laptop or desktop ....do you have a manual for the mobo? .....do you know the mobo model so we can find it .....
If a desktop, remove the side panel and you will see a battery about the size of a nickel ...remove it. (Computer off and unplugged!!!)

I now have access to my BIOS.

What settings do I change now?

Check the boot up order ....should be floppy, cd-rom, hard drive, ...etc.
also on the first screen should list your hard drive ...is it correct?
You may have to hit restore defaults ...but we'll save that for later.

Right click my computer / properties / device manager ...and look to see if either of the devices have an ! or X or ? next to it ....also right click each device and click properties and see it there are any conflicts with IRQ ....and that they are set to DMA mode and the box is checked for allow this device to read audio ..

The 'Ethernet Controller' has a question mark next to it. I do not know what you mean by DMA mode not read audio. This device needs a driver.

My computer now also thinks I have a 1800+. Please assist me with this now.

When you click properties of the device ...there will also be another tab for properties ..there will be the check box for enable audio ...

1800+ what? ethernet card? if the ethernet card needs a driver there is a tab for update driver.

On the ide controllers ..expand that and right click on the secondary ide channel (which is what your cd/dvd's should be on) and that is where the dma setting will be.

And just for the halibut, please do this:
    Panda online active scan
    http://www.activescan.com

And lastly ....get your xp cd and go to start / run / and type "sfc /scannow"
without qoutes ...you'll be prompted to put the cd in the drive ...see if it runs and finds any fixes.

My computer now thinks my 'AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2000MHz' is now an 'AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1500MHz'.

My ethernet card does not need a driver. It apparently needs it's drivers to be reinstalled, that of which I cannot do as I do not have them nor know where to get them.

In my secondary channel it displays only my CD-ROM drive with everything else grayed out with "Let BIOS select transfer mode." checked.

The virus scanner is only one quarter done, I'll update you when it has finished.

    EDIT:
I do not have my Windows XP disks at hand currently.

The anti-virus found "Spyware:Cookie/2o7" but that is it.
