In the first instance does it have issues reading all discs by that I mean pressed and burned.

You says that your MS disc worked fine what about other pressed discs ie music cd's (by pressed I mean manufactured & yes it is my understanding that they are actually pressed like old vinyl used to be).

At the end of the day the unit could have developed a fault or the read laser lens is dirty. If the latter then opening the optical by way of removing the casing and cleaning the laser lens with isopropyl alcohol will cure.

    Good Luck

I was not aware that you could still buy cd-roms new...

Are you sure that the MS software disc is indeed a cd not a dvd....

When you insert the disc into the cd rom, is it detected by the o/s ie if you go to my computer is it listed.....

    Hi,
Yes the disc is detected in my computer but just will not install, it is a cd not a dvd.
I have tried to run it in my dvd player but the same it shows in my computer but will not install...?
It's got me stumped as i can install any other pre recorded discs just not my microsoft ones....?
    Thank you for the help....:major

CDs are very common, will be for a while, since they are backwards compatible.

Does raise an interesting question, can you pull the directory of the problem CDs up? You should be able to click on the setup files and get them started, assuming your CD drive can read the data.

Manufacturing process shouldn't make that much difference, the difference between data and music is none, just file formats.

LOL! http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/104688/rb/27653753330 if you meant the software http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114048 .....

Anyway have you got access to a different computer, if so have you tried the CD in that? If it works in that PC it would suggest that there is definately a problem with your drives/cable/board... more likely to be the drives but you say it happens in both of your drives then this would lead me to the cable it could be knackered. If you still stumped after this it could be worth a trip to your local PC shop.
