w 98 I can not get my cds to open

    The cd-rom drive seems fine,
the drive icon will identify the cd that has been put in it.
If I turn off auto start. Then I can look at the files on the cd. I can explore them, but
they will not open. If I d click an install or start folder the system will hang up
and I will have to reboot. Sometimes i get a error message that there is not enough
free space to start but I have 256k sdram and my 8GB h drive is half full.
It's like the install exc. command is missing. I tried a lot of basic things,
like clearing history defrag disc error scan changing the letter for the drive,
    device mgr.

    I'm lost now
    Any ideas?

    Thanx

    Hey GDD,
Question: Is this a new cd drive (as in just installed) or is one that was working previously?

Post more info of your pc would help
    but any way.
    must be older pc.
Had similar problem few weeks ago with friends pc he had old pc, restore disk win 98 / he wanted to upgrade to 98se
I did f -disk and fresh install full version 98se
when first boot after install same problem with cd as yours and also recognized two floppies drives only he had one.
I installed Adia32 to identify all hardware/web links etc.
Downloaded lastest drivers for all hardware and updated bios.
Went to add and remove hardware removed cd and floppie
rebooted pc, cd and floppie recognized and all was fine.

    Thanks for the reply

I have HP pavillion 4540 intel celeron, 433 mhz, 8gb hd, 256 sdram

This failure happened with the original equip, I happened to come across a new
buslink 52xcd- RW so I put that in and the same problem persists.

Even cds that I have installed years ago will not open any more
Its like set up or install just fails after everything from the cd is loaded.

    Thanks

You did not include your OS. Win9x, Me, 2K, XP and SP level.
At any rate it is not how much memory you have in your PC, it is how much that is available. You may have some items eating up all of you system resources. You need to take a look at how many items are running in task manager. (CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up Task Manager). You can find info (who is running what) on what you see here at:
    http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php
    and also at:
    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Also check on how much free system resources you have. You could also, as ASUS pointed out, have a driver issue you need to resolve.

    getdowndog,

Can you copy files from a CD in the drive? If so, see if the Win9x driver folder on the Buslink driver CD is small enough to fit on a floppy. If it is copy it to a blank floppy.

Then find the CD drive in Device Manager and uninstall it, then reboot and let 98 detect it and prompt you to reinstall the Buslink driver (from the floppy). Try running a CD again and post back and let us know if that worked or not.

I dont know why, but I put my hp recovery disc in and did a hard reboot. for whatever
reason this cd opened and did its job
I saved all my files except parts of outlook 6. so I reinstalled it from the microsoft site
and it is working as is my cd-rom drive.
I have intalled my Nero burner cd and burned my 1st photo rom
