Basically, I have a vanilla CD-ROM reader linked as a slave to a Plextor 708A DVD writer master, and both are linked to the Secondary IDE channel of an Asus PG5D1 motherboard. My two hard drives are chained to the Primary IDE channel.

The Plextor guide says the DVD writer should be set as master with the CD-ROM set as slave. The Plextor's firmware is 1.08, the latest; the CD-ROM is what it is, set at what came out of the box. The OS is Windows XP SP2. Two hard drives are master and slave to Primary IDE channel.

The system identifies the CD-ROM and its icon will appear in My Computer but the system will not read the contents of any CD-ROM in the machine.I've tried two separate CD-ROM drives in the bay. The DVD writer can read just fine; no problem there. Looking in Event Manager, I see Event 51 and Event 9 and Event 11 error messages for the CD-ROM:

IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE Message: An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation)

IO_ERR_CONTROLLER_ERROR Message: The driver detected a controller error on %1

In the Registry, I have some Upper Filters.bak and LowerFilters.bak references which list PX20Help.sys and GEARa WDM...

Searching back through here, one suggestion was to rename the Upper and Lower Filters.bak files to *.zzz; another suggestion from the Asus Technical Support team was to switch the CD/DVD ROM chain to Primary and put the hard drives on the Secondary.

So, can anyone say whether I should do both, either, neither? I really want to solve this and could use a little guidance. Thanks for any help.
