    I recently upgraded my computer, I bought a new mobo, CPU and RAM and when all was said and done I bought a new vid card too. I was frustrated to realize when I installed WinXP x64 there were many errors, files would be corrupted and incorrectly copied to the hard drive during installation and it would constantly freeze. I tried many times to install (7-12 times) and finally it went through. I was suspecting a CD-Rom problem at that time but thought nothing of it once everything was installed. Then the mobo install disk wouldn't work. The splash menu would come up but nothing would be displayed on it, but I could open the files manualy (which is how I installed the drivers). This is also the case with a few of my games namely Diablo 2: LOD (splash menu problem) but the game runs fine (I installed it on a seperate HDD before installing windows.) Also another problem is that when I copy files from my CD-Rom to my HDD it starts off fast and then near the end it starts adding time onto the process (it goes from 30 seconds to 3 minutes to 20 minutes) and then it freezes my computer completely until I open the CD-Rom. I open the task manager and there is lots of free memory and my CPU usage is minimal (1-2% not even from the copying) and the program says "running" not "not responding".

    Any information would be greatful. Also this is a new problem, I was running WinXP Pro on my old system and never had a CD-Rom problem.

    System specs:
    AMD 64 Athlon 3200+
    Abit KN8 S939 Mobo
    WinXP x64 bit
    512 Kingston DDR 400 RAM
    LiteOn LTR-12102C

    Whoa back young pardner ....we all have real jobs and a real life ....some may have been doing dinner ...some coming home from work ..patients, please.:) :)

    First order of biz...Welcome to MG's ...
    Now, you had multiple problems with installs not taking ...usually an indication of bad or mixed ram ....or just a case of a really dirty cd. (Like to throw mine in the can a do a flush ...works well!!)

    Would suggest also a trip to event viewer ...applications and system to find any logged errors ...(usually a link to $MS for suggested fixes).

    Then would suggest going to device manager and checking to see if any ? or ! marked on the cd drives.

    Then ...would suggest an online scan:
    Panda online active scan

    OKAy???:) :)

    Thank you for the response. I didn't mean to sound impatient or rude. I know that everyone here has real jobs and they may or may not even be getting paid to be here on these forums. With all due respect it's been about a week. That may not be a long time in these forums but I would have expected to be acknowleged.

    Anyway, I apologise for my impatience again.

    I will do the things you suggested and report back.

    Thank you.

    Valix ...not a problem. Do understand that when alot of people are posting question, yours (and others) may get lost in the shuffle ....I frankly didn't see the original post nor the first bump ...so don't be hesitant to do as you did ....bump it back up.
    And yes, you should have been acknowledged ...someone could have done that even if they didn't know how to help you .....
    And no, no one is paid ....this is just a community of people who have a desire to be of service to others and share what limited knowledge they may have accumulated along the road ....

    I looked through the event viewer as you suggested and found an error for my cd-rom. There are several errors... in fact there are hundreds involving the cd-rom and some that also involve atapi (at this point I'm assuming it's an ide problem, although I've used several different ide cables with no change in result.) And to answer your question about using a different CD-Rom, I haven't had a chance to do that yet, I don't own a second one and I don't have a way of trying out another one unless I buy a new one, that will be a last resort.

    The atapi error reads: "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period."

    The cd-rom error reads: "The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block."

    There is also a cd-rom "warning" It reads: "An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation."

    Thanks.

    Two things ...what cd writing software do you have installed?
    Second ...ASPI LAYER
    =========================
    WinXP does not come with an aspi layer. So far almost 90% of the problems with winXP and CD burning software are aspi layer problems. After installing winXP, before installing any CD burning software do a few things first:

    1. Open up "My computer" and right click on the CD Recorder. If your CD recorder was detected as a CD recorder there will be a tab called "Recording". On this tab uncheck ALL of the boxes. apply or OK out of it and close my computer.

    2. Next install the standard aspi layer for NT. Reboot when asked.

    That is after the reboot you can install any of the currently working cd recording applications with no problems. If using CD Creator do not install direct CD or Take two as they are currently incompatable but Roxio has promised a fix as soon as XP is released.

    MusicMatch Jukebox 6.X Causes CDROM Drives to Disappear After Installing Nero
    If you install Nero 5.5.5.1 on an XP machine that has MusicMatch Jukebox (MMJB) 6.X installed, you will experience the "lost CDROM drives" syndrome. This is apparently caused by conflicting CD burning drivers in Nero and MMJB. Uninstalling MMJB 6.X solves the problem with the lost drives and allows you to use Nero. Once MMJB 6.X is uninstalled, you can then install MMJB version 7.0, and you will have full functionality in both Nero and MusicMatch Jukebox.

    One other thing ...try going into device manager and uninstall the cd ....then reboot and see if it recognizes and loads properly.

    Did you follow any of the links in the error reports for further info from MS?

    On re-reading your original post ...leaning more to bad ram ...check that its reported correctly and that it is phsically well seated and the same type that is recommended for your mobo.

    I don't know if this means anything but I don't believe that it's a RAM problem because I don't have any problems copying files, even large files (up to 4 gigs I've tried) without problems.

    Valix ...report back how much ram is reported .....
    what you may have found in the event viewer errors as to the links to $MS.
    Did you uninstall the cd and reboot?
    Is the cd the only thing on that IDE channel and jumpered as master and on the last connection on the IDE?
    What cd writing software do you have?

  14. Valix

    My friend told me that using the same IDE cable for two different pieces of hardware ie. hard drive and CD-Rom wouuld slow down the computer because only one piece of hardware could work at one time. So I switched it so that the hard drive and CD-Rom both had their own IDE cable. They are both jumpered to master.

    The RAM is seated properly and I believe it is specified for my mobo.
    http://www.abit.com.tw/test_report/KN8_Series/

    Mine is the Kingston, I'm using the 512MB RAM, I don't know if that could be causing the problem.

    My computer reports 512MB RAM. When I look at the System Properties.

    And yes I uninstalled the CD-Rom and restarted my computer. No luck.

    Your friend was right ....but the hard drive needs to be on the primary IDE, cd on the secondary.
    CD writing programs you have installed?:confused:
    Ram is reporting correctly ...so it probably is a driver issue if the hardware is installed correctly.:)

    Sorry for the delay ....been busy....
    Nero & Invisible Cd Drives!!
    There is certain compatability issues with nero.
    If nero and cdrwin are on the same pc your cd rom drives will become
    invisible.
    To get round this copy the WNASPI32.DLL from the nero folder to the cdr
    win folder and open up cdr win and in the settings select this as your
    aspi driver, then reboot.

    Sorry ...was being a goob ...try this:
    System Cannot Access CD-Rom, CD-Recorder or DVD Devices
    If you uninstalled and reinstalled Nero in XP, or did an upgrade from a previous OS to XP without uninstalling Nero first, this is a known error (for both Adaptec and Nero). There is a problem caused by an association created in the system registry between some Adaptec driver files and the CD file system drivers for Windows 2000/XP. If the Adaptec driver files are renamed or removed, then the system will loose access to any CD drive (CD ROM, CD recorder, or DVD)
    Check here before trying the fix below
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q270008&ID=KB;EN-US;Q270008
    IMPORTANT: The following contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. If Windows XP won't start you can restore the registry by rebooting while pressing the F8 Key. Select "Last Known Good Configuration". Or you can use "System Restore" from Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools.

    1. Uninstall all CD Burning software from the system.
    2. Go to the RUN line and type in Regedt32 and press Enter.
    3. Go to the following registry locations and delete the key values for UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS (Do NOT delete the entire 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BBFC1-08002BE10318 key just right click the individual keys and select Delete)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BBFC1-08002BE10318}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BBFC1-08002BE10318}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    4. Close out of Regedt32.exe and reboot the computer.
    5. You should have access to your CDROM drives after reboot.

    Make sure you create a System Restore Point before you make changes to the registry.

    About the file corruption problem, is your mobo an Nvidia chipset of some kind, and if so, did you install Nvidia's(possibly called nForce) firewall? I recently built a computer and was getting some of the problems you've mentioned, and it was all because of that stupid firewall. I learned that for nForce mobos you should download the latest chipset drivers from Nvidia's site and install them, but make sure that you tell it not to install the firewall.
