I have a Dell Latitude CP-M233ST with a Torsan U200 CD. I have installed Windows XP and the CD will not read a CD written from my Sony Viao with XP.

The Dell came with windows 98. Is There a software to allow it to read?

    Thanks.

It makes no difference what operating system was used. (unless it's NT)

CD's use ISO file system, so PC's with different operating systems can read it.

How was the CD burnt? EG multisession, finalised etc?

    Does the Vaio read it?

Thanks for the reply. The Vaio can read it, it was written from the vaio. Files copied from the vaio like word doc's and finalized. How do you find out if one of the computers are in NT?

Don't worry about NT. You have XP. Only Windows NT can have problems.

Can you see the files on the CD on your Dell PC, in Windows Explorer for example?

I can not read files on the Dell in Explorer. When I try it asks me to please insert a disk into drive D:.

If you know your Dell CD drive is working OK, then it doesn't like the media or disc used.

Not much you can do if it can't see the files. Try another brand of media.

I might be using the wrong CD media. I am using Philips CD-RW 4-12x 700mb 80min. What should I try?
Thanks insomnia for your feedback so far, appreciated. We are spending a month in Australia and the 30th in Sydney. We love Australia too.

I can't tell you a brand that will work for certain.

CD drives use a laser to read and write, and different drives use different lasers.

These lasers have different properties and sensitivities, so they sometimes don't like a particular CD.

CDRW's usually have this problem because they aren't as reflective as CDR's.

You will have to experiment and find a brand that both your machines like.

It's not really a fault of the media or drive, it's just how things are.

I use Verbatim, TDK, and Kodak Gold (if you can get them) and have never had a problem.

Thanks insomnia, I tried Verbatum CDR Disks and it would read what I wrote from my other computer. Thanks again. My CD-ROM will only read and I had forgotten that.
