    HI

If you click My Computer is your CD Drive listed or not?
If you put a CD in the drive and open it, do you get an error message on screen if so what is it?

Which Windows version are you using?

It is possible IF your drive exibits the issues listed in this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 that deleting the upper and lower filters as listed will correct the issue, but make sure you are showing the errors as listed.

Did you mean CD drive or C: drive?

I sure hope your C: drive was there. It's your CD drive that we need to know about. It'll be labelled "D:" or higher.

And what happens when you open the drive, put a disk in it, then close the drive -- using the button on the front of the drive to open and close the tray?

ok. Fristly my C drive is there, my D drive is there and my CD/DVD drive is there. I see them when I click on my computer.

As for what happens when I put a CD in..........absoloutely nothing. It's like its trying to read it, and then a box pops up asking my to insert a disk in the drive.

I'm wondering if the laser that reads the disk has failed. If it's gone, the drive can't read a disk (much less burn another), and it would behave as if there was no disk mounted.

Make sure that you try the drive with a disk that you know the drive was previously able to read. If no go, it's time to buy another drive. They're cheap enough that it's not worth spending a lot of time on.

To put that another way: the cost of a replacement drive will buy maybe a half-hour of a techie's time if you have to pay shop rates for it. (Now you know why the landfills are full of old computer stuff) :(
