cd-roms are silent

Found out my IDE drive configuration is wrong (both cd's on the same cable) and have made the switch. Now neither will send audio to the speakers, which are working fine, playing annoying windows default noises no problem. I have only switched cables. Is it necessary to visit BIOS? What have I omitted? Thanks in advance.

I think I have tried everything three times now. I've communed with the device manager telepathically is search of a clue. I've flirted with real danger in CMOS, changing settings that might have an effect. Nothing.

In WMP 7.0 "tools" I tried to select digital playback (or whatever-see attachment) and am directed to use the default windows cd player. But it won't play audio cd's neither. As I said, the sound card is fine.

Its something really obvious, but what?

This doesn't look like a bios issue to me. Do you have audio wires from the CD Roms to the sound card? There should be one for each. And you can have both CD-Roms on the same cable as long as one is jumpered master and the other slave. If one is a writer, it should be the slave on the same strap as the hard drive, and if it can't be, then it should be master on the secondary. You should probably also get the newer version of windows media player, because version 7 has stupid spots.

No, the only wiring betwen the drives and the sound card is via the pci slot. Always worked fine until the change.
The cd drives worked in the earlier configuration, but you get better transfer speeds between them when on separate cables, and I do a lot of on the fly burning.
Replacing wmp 7.0 is an issue for the future. Personally I hate the long download times involved with anything at MS, and 7.0 has worked fine for me.

What kind of setup do you have now that they are on different cables?

    Map it out for us.

The hd is primary master, burner is primary slave, cd is secondary slave. Both on slave was a surprise to me, but it's recommended at VIAarena under IDE configuration.

If the CD is the only thing on the secondary, I've always set the jumper to CS, Cable Select.

Some info that should have been added earlier: Put an audio cd in either drive and wmp 7 comes on screen, reads the cd and lists tracks and times, and the progress marker moves across indicating the cd is being played. Same with the default windows cd player. But no audio.

Then the system thinks the CD-roms are working correctly or you'd have windows yelling all over the place. Next thing I'd check is the speakers. Are they powered on, or plugged in the right plug in the back of the system, and is the plug in tight. I've done that where I think it's in all the way and it's not, and I've also plugged it into the wrong one because I did it by touch and didn't look at what I was doing, or had the volume too low. If you have a headset, try plugging it into the front of the CD-roms and see if you can hear on the headset. Hope this helps.
