    well, i got a virus on my computer a while ago, then i downloaded an antivirus and after i ran it, my cd roms stopped showing up in my computer. now there are like 5 programs on my computer i can't run because i have to reinstall them with the installation cd and i can't do that because the cd roms aren't working. i've checked all the wires and they're all plugged in. i have 2 cd roms and both of them aren't working. the first one is a i/o magic combo cd-rom dvd drive. the second one is just the ordinary cd rom drive that came with the computer. the computer is a sony viao and the os is windows xp. please help, i have to install those programs.

    check your device manager. Right click [My Computer] and click on [Properties] -> Click on the [Hardware] Tab -> Then click on the [Device Manager] button. Check what it says under [DVD/CD-Rom Drives].

    Well, heres what i would do, i would remove the ide cables from them both[if you got two] after a shut down of course. restart. Shut down again, hook cables back up, boot up again, see if they are there. If not the spyware must have removed something from windows, may have to do a backup, reformat and install windows. Have you tried going back a week or two and restore to that point? ed

    i haven't been able to get on the computer for like a week now. but i just did and i tried what you said. i turned off the computer took out the cables, turn on the computer, turn it off put the cables back in, and turn it back on. it still didn't show up. also, how can i reinstall windows if the cd roms aren't working? the windows cd won't be recognized when i put it in. The other day when i got on the computer i went to my computer and it said f: which is the drive that the cd rom used to be. when i tried to open it it said drive f:/ is not accessable, the next time i turn on my computer and checked, the drive f:// didn't show up at all again.

    Freecd:
    Your windows cd will run even if it is not recognized under device manager.

    Put your windows cd or restore cds in the bay, then hold down the power button until the machine goes off. Then wait about one minute and turn back on. It should boot for the windows cd. Then do a reinstall of windows using the R=repair option.
    Hope that helps

    ok, thanks geeks, but 1 question. if you use the repair option, will it delete all the files and programs i have on my computer right now? or will it just repair anything thats broken?

    A repair xp install will repair your xp with all your accounts & apps intact. Do it.

    Another thing I'd do is log in as admin, click start, run & enter

    sfc /scannow

    You'll need the xp cd used to install xp on this computer.

    As a last resort, I'd remove the working cd drive & connect the non-working cd drive, power up, tab Del key to enter bios, see if it's recognized in the 1st or 2nd menu. If it is, power off, disconnect power cord, connect the other cd drive. Also, make sure one of them is master & the other is slave by setting the jumper cap at the back of it.

    [motherboard]==============[slave cd]=========[master cd]

    That's the way it should be connected.

    hey, i tried booting the computer with the microsoft xp cd in the cd drives, when i started computer, nothing happened. also, akhilles, the 1 cd drive that was showing up in my computers only showed up a few times, but isn't showing up right now. I've tried starting my computer with the xp cd in both cd drives, nothing happens, it just starts up like usuall. then i tried the sfc /scan now, it said i needed to put the xp cd in, i put it in, but it says i didnt. i'm about to try to start the computer again and look at the bios.

    Are both your CDROM devices on the secondary IDE channel? If so, deleting the secondary channel in Device Manager and rebooting may solve your problem, as Windows will find new hardware and reinstall the drivers. Hope this helps!:)

    run sfc /scannow as admin with the good cd driver, shut down, connect the bad one, find it in xp.

    Each time you install/uninstall drives, you set up the boot order in bios. Maybe with the good drive, the boot order is wrong so it won't boot xp cd.
