I need help in finding out what has happened to my Samsung CD RW SW216
At boot up I get Detecting IDE Primary Master OK
    " " " Slave "
" " Secondry Master None. press F4 to continue.
Going to Device Manager the CD Rom (Primary Slave) shows but no sign of CD RW (Secondry Master). Do you think it is possibly the IDE cable that is at fault, and is there any way of testingif it is faulty.

    Windows 98SE
    Intel Pentium lll
    128 MB memory

you can replace the cable with another cable to see if it is recognized. also, try switching it to another ide channel (use the same cable as the hard drive cable, but make sure you move the jumper from master to slave).

Hmm...has it ever worked? As IronMan mentioned did you get bored and dive into the case and get nutty before the problem started?

    My guess is:
A- The Drive jumpers are wrong (conflicting with another drive or there is no jumper to signify its IRQ priority, meaning you have not selected one of the possible 3 jumper positions:
Master(MA): Take presendence over boot and data access scenarios, recommended jumper position for CD or DVD Burners unless it'd conflict with another HardDisk on the same IDE cable configured as "Master'.
Slave(SL): as the name indicates, comes second
Cable Select (CS): This only matters when the jumpers on all the drives connected to the same IDE cable is set to CS position. Then the first connector closer to the mobo would be Master and the furthest would assume the Slave position.
Is this the only drive on the IDE cable, even if you answered yes check the jumper settings in the back to see the configuration. IF you have other drives on the same IDE cable make sure the jumper positions do not conflict with each other.

B- IDE cable is loose or bad.
C- Related IDE channel has been disabled in the BIOS.
D- Related IDE port connector on the mobo or the Drive itself is no good(damaged pins).
E- CD Burner is no good.
F- No power coming to the Drive (see any lights on the Drive if YES check 'B' if no check power cable for the Drive, or see 'E').
