CD-RW/DVD-/+RW COMBO drive not reading CD-R's

i have had this problem for the last few months:

First i use Roxio to burn everything.

i put in a CD-R (while Roxio is running) and it spins.
soon after the spining stops and nothing happends.
Roxio does not read or give any sort of notification that their is ever a disk in the drive. the disk is a blank. the drive reads and writes DVD's and data DVD's just fine. it also reads audio CD's as well as data CD's just fine. but when it comes to a blank CD-R it just wont do it. the drive is about one year and a few months old. (just after the warrenty expires it goes out)

just need a either a reason why it wont work, or what i need to do to fix the problem.

If you put in a blank CDR with Roxio not running, what happens? Be sure that Roxio is totally shut down, including anything it might have running in the background or the system tray. Windows XP should detect the blank CDR and prompt you with "what do you want to do with this blank CD? rip audio CD with Windows Media Player? Burn an audio CD with Windows Media Player?" and a number of other choices....

 

the same thing happens. XP will not recognize the disc. i've tried WMP and XP in hopes to make a CD but still deos not regognize it.It does prompt me about DVD's thought, when i go to My computer it shows in the drive that there is a CD ROM i click on it and the computer just about locks up and i cant get that disk out after i do that. o have to either restart, or standby. it really is a pain.
